The most anticipated event of the year will initiate on June 11th when host nation, South Africa, faces the visiting Mexican squad in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, marking the first ever World Cup tournament to be played in African soil; however, a great number of concerns are being raised as to how secure players and spectators will be while at the World Cup, seeing that various threats from terrorist group Al-Qaeda have found their way to the South African Police Service (SAPS); moreover, the possible arrival of President Barack Obama has the South African police running franticly to and fro, aware of the vast amount of security Obama’s visit would require.

Abdullah Azzam Salih Misfar, head of the Al-Qaeda terrorist group declared that he “submitted a plan” in order to punish Denmark for the publication of a series of cartoons depicting the face of Muhammad; when an Al-Qaeda operative was captured in Iraq, it was learned that Al-Qaeda was hatching a plot to attack the 2010 World Cup.

In response to emerging fear amongst players and spectators alike, the SAPS has declared that it will position 41,000 officers to patrol the South Africa World Cup, making valuable use of newly-acquired, hi-tech equipment such as “new helicopters, unmanned aircrafts, 10 water cannons, 100 BMWs for highway patrol, mobile command vehicles, body armor and other crowd management resources such as hi-tech bomb disposal equipment,” states David Heln, columnist for Internationalsoccer.com.

As for Obama, the President has expressed sincere aspirations to visit South Africa during the World Cup if and only if the USA squad gets passed the second or third stage of the World Cup.

The South African Police Service has turned this matter over and over again in their minds, realizing that security will become a major factor during the World cup since it is expected that 43 heads of states are planning on visiting the 2010 World Cup.

General Bheki Cele, head of the SAPS, declared that Obama’s visit is an agonizing “50-50” deal, a deal which has the South African police scurrying, enthralled in their “famous prayer”: the rapid first-round elimination of the US Squad.

Furthermore, Cele highlights the South African police’s concern over Obama’s visit when he states that the vast security measures that will be rendered to the 43 visiting heads of states will be equal to the immense security and protection that Obama will need alone.

President Obama obviously is aware of all the commotion his “50-50” presence in the World Cup is causing, and in response is asserting the fact that if he decides to attend the South African 2010 World Cup, it will not be out of want for a vacation, but rather because of the significance behind the fact that a nation once torn apart by apartheid will now serve as host to people from all over the world, opening its doors joyously and gratefully.

No other World Cup tournament has caused this much commotion in terms of security before and yet no other World Cup tournament has been reason enough to celebrate the host nation’s honor of hosting the World Cup.

Once torn by apartheid, now united by futbol, South Africa will make history on June 11, when it opens its doors for the eyes of the world to see the joyous Bafana Bafana celebrate equality.
