The Mission Viejo High School Cheer and Song team have always been on the sidelines of every football and basketball game, but there is much more to the team than what students at Mission. Both teams face difficult and long practices, a countless number of hardships, and new yet dangerous skills every practice and game they attend. Also, there have been some dramatic changes to the Pep Squad for the upcoming season. A new advisor has stepped in for the 2010-2011 school year and she is also taking on the job of head varsity cheer coach, coaching a total of twenty-one girls. Her name is Tara Collins and she was a member of the MVHS Cheer team all four years of her high school experience. Ms. Collins-along with the help of the JV coach, Erica Gill- is expected to lead the Cheer team to excellence this year. However, the Cheer team is not the only sideline squad that should be expected to be at its greatest. The Varsity song team, coached by Anne DaVilla and Nikki Beck, should be sure to surprise everyone with their improving styles of dance this year. For both the Song and Cheer team, they are often shut out of the “sports” category at MVHS, but what students’ don’t see is really what makes cheer and song sports. Facing three-times-a-week practices that go on for an hour and a half to two hours at a time, these girls are known to face sprained ankles, broken bones, pulled hamstrings, and other dislocated body parts during each practices. However, each girls pulls through to give our crowd and the football team the best Friday night game experience possible. Pep Squad is really stepping up their level of involvement with the school for next year. The students of MVHS can expect to see more halftime shows, pep assembly routines, and all around improvement in the Pep Squad as a whole. After coming back from Cheer Camp and taking a trip to Seattle, Washington for the football teams first game of the season, the Pep Squad will be at its highest standpoint. Although cheer and song completely differ from each other, they will remain a team throughout the whole year and all the drama and difficulties they face during that time. The closeness and bond that each girl has for their teammates really defines how much of a sport cheer and song are. All the hard work they put in from tryouts, to summer practices, to camp, to get prepared for the cheer season really prove to make the Pep Squad a power house for the MVHS sports department, and this year they will be better than ever. So expect to see more intensified kicks, flips, turns, jumps, leaps, and stunts next year on the sidelines of every football game.

The list of great athletes at Mission Viejo High School is a long one, which makes selecting the athlete of the year a difficult task. There were many excellent candidates for female athlete of the year in 2010, from volleyball to swimming to softball. The Diablo Dispatch has selected girls’ soccer player Allie Harrison as Mission Viejo High School’s 2010 female athlete of the year.

Harrison, a senior midfielder who was a captain last season, had another great season – her third on the varsity squad. Heading into the season, she was No.7 on the Orange County Register’s list of the top 15 seniors to watch in 2010. Though the team struggled, finishing with a record of 7-8-9 (1-5-4 in South Coast League), Harrison was still able to shine. She finished the season with 7 goals, including an impressive game against Laguna Hills High School on December 3rd in which she scored two goals.

In an era in high school and college athletics where there seems to be less emphasis on the “student” and more on the “athlete,” Mission’s student-athletes have done an excellent job of succeeding in the classroom, and many are headed to prestigious universities because of their work in both areas. Harrison is no different as she will be headed to the University of Southern California this fall on a full athletic scholarship.

During the past four years at Mission Viejo High School, basketball star Ben Hayes has consistently been one of the top athletes in his class. He has received multiple honors, including winning awards, taking league championships, and signing with the University of California Irvine. His most recent honor is that of being named the 2009-2010 South Coast League basketball player of the year. After having considered all candidates for male athlete of the year at Mission, no other athlete had accomplishments comparable to the basketball phenom. The Diablo Dispatch officially has named Hayes as their male athlete of the year.

In 2010, the Diablo basketball team had one of the most successful seasons in school history. Troy Roelen’s squad finished with a record of 24-5 as they were able to advance all the way to the Division II CIF Southern Section quarterfinals where they finally lost to Loyola to end their season. Throughout the magical season, Hayes was the player that Mission looked to when a big shot was needed. Hayes was a leader on the court, and in the box score night in and night out.

Hayes first picked up a basketball at the age of five and shot on his plastic fisher price hoop. He instantly fell in love with the sport, and as he puts it, he was “Ballin’ from the woom.” Once he began to play competitively in second grade, he began to separate himself from the other players. A few years later, he entered the prestigious AAU club basketball circuit.

Hayes’ club team is called One Tough School. Hayes blossomed as a star under the wing of his coach, Rich Prospero. “He’s had one of the biggest impacts on me during my growth as a player,” says Hayes. One Tough School has been one of the toughest teams in the club circuit throughout the past few seasons, only losing three games during the summer season last year. While this AAU team put Hayes on the map, he had another team to worry about, which was Mission Viejo.
