Diablo Dispute: Thanksgiving: Is it a necessary holiday?

Let’s Replace Thanksgiving

Credit: Karolina Grabowska

America loves to celebrate this holiday of thankfulness but forgets to give back to the Native Americans whose land they stole.

We’ve grown up listening to the story of Thanksgiving in our elementary history classes.

In 1620, the Mayflower Pilgrims traveled to the Americas and decided to settle in what is now called Plymouth, Massachusetts.

The Pilgrims could barely survive one winter and only half of them made it to the next spring. However, it wasn’t until they met Squanto, a Native American man from the Wampanoag confederation, that they then started learning how to cultivate the land.

After the first successful corn harvest in the fall, the Governor of the Plymouth colony, William Bradford, declared that there should be a great feast in which the Wampanoag Native Americans who helped them were invited to join.

This is the pretty picture presented to us in our youth; two completely different groups of people come together and help one another despite whatever differences they may share.

The reality of this picture is that this colonization resulted in a massive loss of millions of people, dying cultures, and the theft of stolen land.

The reality of Thanksgiving is that it is a white-washed holiday, and it’s a holiday that will always be tainted by the history of America’s stolen land.

Five decades after the first Thanksgiving took place, the Plymouth Pilgrims and the Wampanoag Confederation fought in a bloody war that nearly decimated the Wampanoag people because of the imminent threat of losing Native land.

Over the next four or so centuries, the settlers continued to expand their territory while stealing from the Natives. This came with many more bloody wars such as the Pequot Wars, the French and Indian wars, the Battle of Bloody Run, the Battle of Timbers.

All of these wars began to preserve Native territory.

Treaties continued to be made, promising that the Native Americans could keep some of their land, but those promises were never fulfilled and too many died to preserve what they could.

For many Native Americans, Thanksgiving is a day of mourning.  An organization called The United American Indians of New England gather every Thanksgiving to mourn over the millions of lives lost and protest the oppression experienced by many Native Americans.

There is so much history our textbooks don’t tell us about the problems Native Americans faced in the past or even in the present.

Firstly, the American government has attempted many times to forcefully assimilate Native American into white culture. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, a man named Richard Henry Pratt designed a boarding school system designed to “Kill the Indian in him, and save the man.”

While attempting to strip away their culture, these schools were also incredibly abusive with many students dying as a result of the treatment they received.

When the boarding school era began to end, the US government attempted to assimilate the Native American people by initiating the Indian Adoption project which stripped many young Native children from their biological families.

These problems don’t only exist in the past; there are people alive today who can tell these stories of forced assimilation for themselves.

Even today, hundreds of Native American women are going missing or are found dead. Many advocacy groups are attempting to combat this problem but the federal government has failed to provide them with any protections.

This is why Thanksgiving is a day of mourning for many Native Americans, and this is why Thanksgiving will always be tainted by its history and the consequences of that history no matter how good the sentiment may be.

I am able to recognize that the sentiment behind Thanksgiving can be positive. We should practice thankfulness and be aware of the good things we have in life.

But do we really need to maintain the false story of Thanksgiving in order to do that?

Replacing Thanksgiving doesn’t have to mean that we stop being thankful, gathering with family, eating good food, or taking a week off from school.

Replacing Thanksgiving simply means that we as a county have the ability to acknowledge that we’ve done wrong in the past, we’re still doing wrong by failing to acknowledge these problems, and we need to make a change.

Is Thanksgiving necessary?

Why it’s important to have Thanksgiving a holiday that is meaningful.

Thanksgiving is a traditional holiday that people connect with their family and friends to give thanks.  When thinking of Thanksgiving, the first thing that pops up is probably the delicious turkey, creamy mashed potatoes, and all the other personal recipes. Although some people’s first thoughts may be the original history of how thanksgiving can to be, the Indians and the pilgrims but Thanksgiving has changed traditions too much to be associate with its past.

Thanksgiving is not only about the food it’s about showing love and gratitude for the people in your life. Although some people see Thanksgiving as a holiday that could be forgotten because of its harsh history involving the Native Americans and pilgrims. People’s thoughts that Thanksgiving shouldn’t be a holiday because of its background are completely justified as the holiday does have a rough past involving the Indians and their land.

In my, home Thanksgiving has always been just about getting my family together and spending time cooking with the people that I haven’t see for some time. Having the time that I can spend cooking and talking with my family members is something I’m greatly appreciative of. Even if Thanksgiving is only a few weeks away from Christmas some of my friends and family don’t celebrate the winter holiday so I’m not able to see them then.

Another way to see Thanksgiving is to know that most people that do celebrate Thanksgiving are celebrating by giving thanks to the people around them or showing gratitude to people that they may not even know. The holiday and how we celebrate it in my household is to simply show appreciation for each other and acknowledge what we are lucky enough to have.

People usually get Thanksgiving off of work or school to celebrate with their families, The question that many people have in school districts or workplaces is if Thanksgiving is a necessary holiday to have off. I think that Thanksgiving is an important holiday to have off to spend time with loved ones. While the true history of Thanksgiving is violent and the untold injustices that were done to the Indigenous people of America are heart wrenching, The sentiment of being loving towards others is what the holiday should focus on.

The Swearing of Justice Amy Coney Barrett Stirs Up Enthusiasm and Unease

0

Newly appointed Supreme Court Justice Barrett’s beliefs and her role in future Supreme Court rulings is a cause for controversy across the nation.

The country mourns over Ruth Bader Ginsburg, former associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, who passed away on September 18th, 2020. She is admired for her constant fight for equal rights and for inspiring millions to break barriers through her groundbreaking accomplishments.

With her death came a need for someone to fill her position. On September 26th, according to The White House, President Donald Trump announced his intention to nominate United States circuit judge Amy Coney Barrett to succeed Justice Ginsburg. The Senate voted 52-48 the next month, which confirmed her nomination.

She officially became the 103rd Supreme Court Justice of the United States on October 27, 2020 – just seven days before the 2020 presidential election on November 3rd.

Justice Barrett is especially significant because of her close proximity to such a momentous election – but its results are still being debated. Although Democratic candidate Joe Biden won by 290 electoral votes versus President Trump’s 232, and by five million popular votes, Trump refuses to concede or stop fundraising. Himself and his supporters believe that he won the election, and are crediting Biden’s victory to voter fraud.

Born in Louisiana in 1972, Justice Barrett is the eldest of seven children and a member of a devout Catholic family. She attended an all-girls Roman Catholic high school, then proceeded to get a Bachelor of Arts degree at Rhodes College.

She then attended Notre Dame Law School, where she was the editor of the Notre Dame Law Review. Justice Barrett graduated with a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree. While at law school, she met and later married fellow graduate Jesse M. Barrett. They now have seven children, two of which are adopted.

Her career before the Supreme Court consisted of two years as a judicial law clerk and three years at a law firm. She also taught courses on statutory interpretation and constitutional theory as a professor of law at multiple universities.

In terms of beliefs and political views, Justice Barrett is an originalist and a textualist. Being an originalist means that in her rulings, she holds firmly to the meaning of the Constitution at the time of its ratification. As a textualist, Justice Barrett believes that judges should use statutory language consistent with its original meaning.

It is clear that many are most curious about her views on controversial issues such as abortion, LGBTQ+ rights, and immigration.

While Barrett has never ruled directly on abortion, she has openly opposed the issue, as seen when she spoke at two anti-abortion events at University of Notre Dame, and signed anti-abortion advertisements.

Speaking of healthcare, Justice Barrett signed a letter criticizing The Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare. The Supreme Court is currently working on a case regarding access to health insurance, so the ruling could be influenced by Barrett’s opinion on this subject.

On the widely debated topic of LGBTQ+ rights, the justice has not made a clear statement. Allies and members of the LGBTQ+ community are concerned that her devotion to Catholicism and statement that marriage and family is “founded on the indissoluble commitment of a man and woman” is a sign that she will work against rights for same-sex couples, trangender people, etc.

Justice Barrett has quite the history with immigration related cases. For instance, she helped advance one of President Trump’s major immigration policies, which imposed a wealth test on millions of immigrants coming into the U.S. Her 40-page dissent on the case argued that the U.S. has the right to block immigrants who may depend on public assistance in the future.

Based on her previous rulings and opinions on several issues not limited to the ones mentioned here, individuals from both the Republican and Democratic parties have a lot to say about her.

Republicans are largely in support and even admiration of Justice Barrett, feeling that her qualifications, strict interpretation of the Constitution, and alignment with conservative ideologies make her a great justice to have in the Supreme Court, who will help make rulings that are beneficial to the American people.

On the other hand, many Democrats are troubled over Barrett’s new position, worried that she will bring her religion into the court, and vote in favor of rulings that will harm and take away the rights of certain American people. Kamala Harris spoke on this when she said that “The threat to choice is real.” The justice’s goals obviously do not align with Democratic ambitions, making most from the side immediately opposed to her.

During a time of so much controversy and so many changes, it is ever so important to advocate for what you believe in, have open-minded conversations with those who think differently, and seek out factual information. It is unknown what the future of our country holds, but we must hold onto hope and continue to seek out the truth.

What It’s Like To Go To The Movies In A Global Pandemic

The new Warner Brothers film Tenet, a time travel movie revolving around time travel and World War 3, came out September 3rd. What made the movie stand out was that amidst a global pandemic it still was only in theaters.

The entirety of the movie experience felt off from what I considered ordinary, which I had already expected coming into the theater. The staff was a skeleton crew, the theaters had one tenth the people in them, and the restaurants near it were closed down.

It started off weird when I was buying my tickets, I was just about to purchase the seats (ten of which were taken) and then it said that it was sold out. I was perplexed at first but later found out that they were only letting fifteen people into the theater.

Once I got to Kaleidoscope, where the movie theater was located, I was shocked to find that five or so shops and/or restaurants were closed down, these places had lots of foot traffic pre-pandemic because of the theater.

What was also perplexing was to see that some of the people were not wearing masks. Once I walked into the theater I saw about 7 people in the lobby and then scanned our tickets and went to Theatre 1, I noticed that only a quarter of the showing rooms were open.

Going to sit down I realized a couple things, the lights were not dimmed yet and the theater was still playing previews about the same length, maybe even longer (25 minutes). It was five minutes into the movie the lights still were not dimmed, then I saw a guy walk outside and shortly after the lights dimmed. According to the theater employees you are not allowed to take your mask off in the theater by protocol but I saw a couple of people doing it anyway, I thought it was fine seeing as the closest person to me was 12 feet apart but some people’s feelings might differ.

The movie was extremely loud, this could be because the theater was understaffed, the movie’s sound was engineered in covid-19, or the sound engineer just wanted it loud. Other than that the movie was really good and there were no other hitches in the movie theater experience. The story was amazing, which makes sense seeing as the person behind the film was Christopher Nolan, the director of legendary movies such as Inception, Interstellar, and the Dark Knight Trilogy.

So if you’re craving a movie theater experience with a blockbuster film right now Tenet is the way to go. It will give you the closest experience you can have to normalcy, with the exception of being in a pandemic and all the things that come from that.

Model United Nations Hosted the Perfect Conference

On the weekend of January 18th and 19th, Mission Viejo High School hosted their 37th Model United Nations (MUN) Conference in a professional and well planned manner. The Mission MUN class has been working tirelessly for the past five months to prepare for the event that they got to host.

At the event one could witness delegates from ages 12 to 18 debate on topics such as the Zika Virus, illegal drug trade, and coral reef destruction. The younger and less experienced delegates participated in Novice committees on Saturday, and the Advanced committees took place both days.

The 17 different schools that came to the event all had nothing but praise for the Mission students and the overall experience from the conference.

While observing a spectrum of different types of committees there was an overall air of professionalism from the working students. The Mission Viejo members all knew how to perform their jobs even when in unexpected situations and under large amounts of stress.

The senior based secretariat board chose the topic that will be discussedfor each committee, and the head chairs wrote the topic synopsis that the delegates worked off of. Many of the subjects that were picked are very relevant to what is happening in the world today which helped the students be passionate and well informed in their arguments. The master mind of the conference however was Mrs. Kimberly Gerwatosky, or as the students refer to her as Mrs. G, the MUN advisor at Mission Viejo. When I got a chance to speak with her, she couldn’t help but praise her secretariats, or student leaders, for all of the hard work they put into preparing the conference. The secretariats were behind everything from the sponsored lunch, to the name tags to the door labels. The recognition for the success of this conference mostly goes to the secretariats and how well they work together as an organizational unit.

The Mission Viejo MUN program focuses on, in Mrs. G’s words, “diplomacy, collaboration, working with others, because once you find common ground you’re going to be more able to work with others.” She greatly enjoys hosting because she gets to watch her students learn to be respetful when interracting with visiting students and shows them how to have integrity when it comes to their responsibilities.

Mrs. G, as she puts it, “run(s) around to make sure that any fires are put out.” She was overjoyed to hear that four school board members that observed the conference all had nothing but positive feedback for the hosting class. Mrs. G also couldn’t help but mention their sponsoring charity.

The sponsoring charity was the Obey Foundation. This operation was created by Abishai Ben Reuben, Kojo Bey, and Adrese Roundtree, and is a non-profit organization that has been helping children in Sub-Saharan Africa by building schools and recreational centers since 1998. Because of this organization, so many doors are being opened for these children that without the Obey Foundation would not have been.

Restaurant Review: Diho Siam

Is Diho Siam a gem hidden in the rough? Do they have fantastic food worth raving over? I’ll be reviewing everything about the restaurant from the menu to the service.

This Iconic restaurant has been around for a very long time serving both Thai and Chinese cuisine. Diho Siam gets a strong 4.7 out of 5 even though I have some personal biases this restaurant is really unique and has been serving the community for many years.

Diho Siam has been around for the last few decades and isn’t going anywhere. They are an interesting restaurant as they have two different menus, one for Thai and one for Chinese cuisine. This restaurant has been a staple to the community and hopefully will continue far into the future. The rating for this restaurant will be broken down into three categories: service, food, and overall ambiance of the restaurant.

Now onto the review of the restaurant, I was quickly greeted by some of the most friendly staff. Through my meal, they continuously asked if I needed anything and were extremely accommodating for the most part. The servers also work together, so they all ask if they can get you something, and this is probably due to how small the restaurant is. I would give their service a 5 out of 5 a perfect score as there is little more they can do to improve.

The service was excellent, but the most important part of any meal is if the food is any good. In fact, I think that it’s delicious, but if you’re not accustomed to the flavors or a picky eater, you might not like a good amount of what’s offered.

I ordered the Panang curry with chicken at spice level 5. It was excellent, and for the price, you’re getting quite a lot of filling food that is delicious. The curry has a good flavor and has this lovely aroma that hits you in the face. Excellent food overall. They even have this spice rack they will bring out if you ask for it, and you can add as much spice as you like from all the different types. The food I would easily give a 5 out of 5 as they really do have some delicious flavors and the price point is prime. Last but not least, the ambiance of the restaurant.

The restaurant is old but has had some updates over the years. It’s small and has a lot of character from all the choices for decor. It has an excellent feel, and I have personally always enjoyed how the restaurant looked. Some people might find it to be old looking, but I think it adds character to the space and makes it unique. This is a strong 4 out of 5 stars as it really is a nice looking restaurant but lacks a more modern feel that so many like.

This restaurant is a must-try if you enjoy either Thai or Chinese food. The overall rating for this restaurant came out to be a 4.66, which I just rounded up so it received a 4.7. It got this score as it did hit almost every check. The restaurant has its own special little charm and has fantastic food that is affordable for most. If you go, I recommend trying something that is usually out of your comfort range or just trying something new you never know you might find something you absolutely love .

Harley Quinn’s incredible debut is overlooked

By: Leila Alarcon

It turns out Harley’s emancipation didn’t go as planned.

The new DC movie, “Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)”, is a solo film for the one and only Harley Quinn (played by the extremely talented Margot Robbie). The movie follows Harley and her new girl gang on a journey to establish a name for themselves as they race against another villain to find a young girl named cass.

The movie gained a lot of attention from the media and an incredible soundtrack of all female artists to go along with the release of the film. However, the results of the films opening weekend were underwhelming.

“Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)” had high expectations for the box office, fifty million dollars to be exact. Unfortunately, the film only brought in thirty three million during its debut weekend.

Compared to DC’s last villain centered film “Joker”, “Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)” is disappointing. “Joker” smashed the box office with its debut bringing in ninety six million dollars.

“Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)”isn’t bad nor is it badly received by audiences. In fact, the film was so greatly received by audiences that it’s inability to meet its expectations is rather confusing.

The film currently has an eighty one percent on rotten tomatoes and audiences gave it a B+ on CinemaScore. As expected, the film was liked by audiences much more than DC’s other villain centred movie “Suicide Squad”.

“Joker” was just a masterpiece and even won two of the eleven oscars that it was nominated for. Although, “Joker” was a much more serious film meant to leave audiences shocked while “Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)” is similar to Marvel’s Deadpool, light hearted and meant to bring audiences satisfaction.

For people wondering if anyone would be playing Joker in the film, he makes no appearance. Joker is only mentioned in “Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)” for the sake of the plot line and reasoning for Harley’s emancipation from him.

It seems DC is directing audiences away from focusing on how big a role the Joker has on the plot line for this film because of people’s distaste for Jared Leto’s interpretation of him. The Joker that Joaquin Phoenix encompassed couldn’t be the Joker in this film either, even though audiences loved his version of Joker, because that Joker’s film was already established as separate from the DC extended universe and is much too mature for the Harley Quinn in “Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)”.

Not to many were upset about the missing Joker situation as no one desperatly wants the return of the Joker from “Suicide Squad”. Honestly, I don’t blame them for not wanting that Joker back because he wasn’t all that great.

Hopefully the following weeks that “Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)” is in theaters for are much kinder to the film. It’s a fantastic movie and Margot Robbie does such an incredible job at bringing such a lovable Harley Quinn to life.

The Contraversial New Smoking Age Law

The smoking age in U.S officially changes to 21 years old

On December 19, 2019, President Trump signed a bill to raise the legal smoking age from 18 to 21. The new law prohibits the vending of cigarettes and e-cigarettes to anyone under the age of 21, and went into effect at the start of 2020. The new law comes at a time when the government faces pressure to reduce the rate of smoking among teenagers.

The raise of smoking age had bipartisan help in the Senate, and was co-written by Democrats Brian Schatz and Dick Durbin, and Republicans Mitt Romney and Todd Young, CNN reported. These senators have been campaigning for the limitation for quite a while, lastly making it happen by connecting it to a series of must-pass bills to avoid an administration shutdown.

While raising the legal age limit of tobacco use from 18 to 21 is a significant accomplishment for the White House, 19 states and a few urban communities had already passed legislation to raise the tobacco purchasing age to 21. As said by Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, these states include Washington, Arkansas, Virginia, California, Utah, Illinois, Connecticut, Vermont, Delaware, Texas, Hawaii, Pennsylvania, Maine, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Jersey, Ohio, New York, and Oregon.

Surprisingly, the new law has received a great deal of backing from cigarette and e-cigarette companies. Those in the cigarette and e-cigarette enterprises see it as a way to reduce the public’s anger about their campaigning to the younger audience.

As indicated by certain doubters of the move, raising the age to 21 makes no sense when 18-year-olds can serve in the military, go into legal contracts, and get married. Additionally, raising the legal smoking age may increase the illegal vending of cigarettes and e-cigarettes.

On the other hand, raising the smoking age from 18 to 21 will most likely save lives.  A 2015 report from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) discovered raising the smoking age to 21 could help prevent approximately 223,000 premature deaths among Americans born between 2000 and 2019.

The new law is very controversial, but whether  it will actually do any good, time will tell.

Valentines Day, a day seemingly filled with love and passion.  Though those aren’t the only sentiments held on this special day especially regarding how utterly stupid the holiday is.

Credit: Pinterest

Valentine’s Day was a day practically engineered by capitalism to make emotions worth a monetary value.  Nothing is more sexy than an overpriced bouquet of flowers, of chocolates, jewelry, reservation or plushies-literally I could go on and on about how many businesses are making a quick buck on the holiday.

It’s no wonder why couples seem to think objects can make each other happy.  The total spending cost of $18.2 billion on Valentine’s Day is being funneled back into commercials and ads that are made to engineer thinking just like this.  Though apparently America is willing to throw their money at these charms and jewelry, with the average American spending $133 on Valentine’s Day according to the National Retail Federation.

What’s up with all these high standards for gifts anyways?  If Valentine’s Day was truly about showing your love to someone else, why do you have to blow your bank account on some stupid necklace called “chocolate gold”.  Wouldn’t a homemade gift from memories shared together be worth more than any Pandora charm.

Speaking of Pandora and other jewelry companies their shiny trinkets are usually overpriced, with their cheapest charm $40 being a hedgehog called Nino which is only .524 inches high.  Speaking of over priced, ‘chocolate gold’ necklaces sell at their lowest value for $80 on Amazon which is, ludicrous considering that you’re just buying brown gold.

Isn’t the purpose of Valentine’s Day not built upon goofy gifts to appease a status quo that your relationship is working but a day filled with soft moments between a couple instead of a preening contest of who can have the biggest gift for their significant other.

How does one say no to all this Valentine’s Day fervor without coming off as a Scrooge yelling “Bah Humbug!” This surrounding mentality has intoxicated the very relationships it promotes, forcing couples to become something else to appear as a ‘good couple’.

Society is so obsessed with playing matchmaker they don’t realize all the negative stigma it begins to create towards those they can’t idolize in being in a fairy tale perfect relationship.  The singles appear bad because unlovable to people who think no one wants to date them and any couples not competing for the biggest mirror to admire their ‘perfection’ in are seen as not seen as happy as those who decide to burn themselves out on said lush gifts.

It’s about high time society butts their head out of other people’s relationships.  Leave couples to their own devices, they don’t need a day to celebrate themselves if they are really happy in their relationship, everyday feels like what Valentine’s Day should be.

Therefore Valentine’s Day should be the equivalent of a weird national holiday, like National Hot Dog Day where it would be a pleasant acknowledgement to how much work and dedication a relationship takes, not some overpriced social media post that is skipped over with the flick of a finger.

I will close out with only two sentiments; one, Valentine’s Day as of now is a holiday that puts a price tag on love; and two, Netflix is the best part of Valentine’s Day.

Donald Trump and the Death of an Iranian General

0

By: Eja Fromm

The world wonders if another World War is at stake as Iran and the U.S. engage in concerning conflicts.

On January 3rd, top Iranian General Qassem Soleimani was killed in a drone strike orchestrated by the United States government.

Trump had ordered for the death of Soleimani nearly seven months ago, under certain conditions; if Soleimani’s actions led to the death of an American, Trump could order the command to kill him.

Relations with Iran had already been tense since Trump’s decision to remove the United States from the Iran nuclear deal. The deal would have Iran redesign and repurpose its nuclear facilities while the economic sanctions on them would be lifted in return.

However, when Trump pulled out of the deal on the grounds that Iran’s aggressiveness violated its nature, Tehran later released a statement that they were no longer inclined to obey certain parts of the deal.

Since July of 2019, Iran has slowly been reducing the committments they initially agreed to at the start of the deal, gradually increasing its uranium enrichment while other nations invovled in the deal scramble to save what’s left.

This caused some tension between all national bodies involved in the Iran nuclear deal as Iran, concerned that more Western nations would pull out and impose more economic sanctions, gradually pulled back on the deal while the United States isolated itself from the position of its other allies.

Trump has been concerned with Iran’s actions, believing them to be increasingly hostile and worrying. Since 1979, Iran has been investing significantly in proxy groups and allies throughout the Middle East in order to wreak havoc and terror while expanding their sphere of influence in the region.

In one of their attacks in Iraq, they killed a U.S. contractor and four U.S. service members, leaving Trump with the decision to kill Soleimani.

The air strike that killed him on January 3rd took place near Baghdad International Airport, killing nine others beside Soleimani, including Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis who had been a deputy commander in Iran and listed as a terrorist in the United States.

Iran responded fiercely, threatening the U.S. with retaliation which eventually was fulfilled. On January 8th, Iran launched several ballistic missiles onto U.S. military bases in Iraq which had no deaths but several casualties. On the same day, Iran also shot down a plane, killing 176 people who were mostly Iranian graduates visiting families in the country.

After the Iran’s strike took place, Trump released a statement that seemed to alleviate the situation, saying that U.S. would not use violent force as a response to the situation unless Iran forced our hand.

Although Trump initially stated that none of the troops had been injured, 50 U.S. service members were diagnosed with brain trauma as a result of the attacks. Trump seemed to downplay the injuries stating that he heard they had headaches but not elaborating further upon that.

Essentially, the attacks that took place on the new year set a scary time on the new year, with many believing it could be the start to another world war. Thankfully, it seems that neither side went so far as to declare any action such as that.

However, with the United States holding its stand against Iran, it will be interesting to see the development of relations between these nations.

First Memes of 2020

The memes that will decide the fate of the meme community for the rest of the year.

The meme community makes memes out of the most controversial topics like World War Three and the Coronavirus. The so-called meme community is a bunch of people usually on Reddit who wants to have a good time and make fun out of controversial ideas. Usually, there is no ill intent towards people it’s just for fun.

First memes of 2020 and the most popular meme so far are the World War Three memes. People say that it is the first meme of 2020 and maybe the last.

James Charles a youtube celebrity decided to have some fun with the meme but after he made a post about it he received tons of backlash. He posted a tweet saying “When the government knocking on the door for the draft” followed by four pictures of him dressed as a female.

Other influencers brought light to this meme such as Pewdiepie in a meme review. The subject of the meme is serious but the community bonded over it and just wants a fun time.

For example, the text reads“Me laughing about the World War 3 memes vs.me when I get that draft letter” with a side by side or a guy being happy and the guy crying.

World War three memes don’t have any specific format to it, The meme is also slowly but surely fading away. It also only has been about a month since the meme surfaced so it goes to show how jumpy the meme community is.

Another popular meme that came about is the plus 25 Uno card meme. It is a write ur own card and it would say something you would not want to do or plus 25 cards. For example, “call or text your most recent ex or draw 25”.

One of the popular memes now is the Coronavirus. Even though it is a real disease. It does not have any specific format but it is a widely known meme that spread quite fast globally.

Another meme that is relevant right now is SpongeBob by a fire with a piece of paper. The meme is formatted into four quadrants. The first one is just a blank paper, then the second one is SpongeBob looking at the paper. The third one is sponge bob throwing the paper into the fire then lastly he warming his hands in the fire.

All of these memes show that memes flow in and out of relevancy on the internet. Anything can change in an instant when it comes to the meme community.

All of them have their time to shine but comes with a downfall like we are seeing in WW3 memes. The memes will never stop rolling in with every new idea that comes five more in the meme community.
