How Will Holiday Shopping Be Affected By Blocked Ports?

The pandemic is haunting the global supply chain and shoppers.

With the peak of the holiday shopping season coming up, buyers are encountering empty store shelves, rising prices and shipping delays that seem to stretch into oblivion. Container ships are clogging ports, awaiting cargo or unable to get past the gridlock to unload their goods. Some factories have even gone out of business, lacking raw materials and hands to run machines.

A growing number of shipments are stuck at sea because of supply chain issues, leading to growing concern that holiday shipments may not arrive in time. Container ships are crowding ports from New York to Los Angeles, where 250,000 containers are floating off the coast waiting to be unloaded.

Holiday shoppers are beginning to worry because a third of the more than 5,700 people recently surveyed by Oracle, which provides cloud services for many large retailers such as Prada and Office Depot, worry that they won’t get everything on their wish lists and if they do, they will end up paying more than intended.

The coronavirus pandemic has been wreaking havoc on global supply chains since it began nearly two years ago, causing suppliers and retailers many challenges along the way with trying to keep the virus out of offices and factories, navigating shutdowns and business restrictions.

Larger companies, including Walmart, have chartered entire ships to deliver goods to less congested ports. The tremendous cost makes it out of reach for small businesses.

Then there’s the steady rise of raw materials prices and skyrocketing shipping costs. The nation is also experiencing difficulties such as being short on truck drivers and warehouse workers.

“There’s no room to put this cargo. Our docks are full. People need to come and pick up their cargo,” said Gene Seroka, executive director of the Port of Los Angeles. “Only half the truck drivers registered to do business here visit us at least once a week. We need more drivers on the job.”

Since materials are starting to cost more, buyers are starting to have to pay more. Problems have been compounded by a labor shortage that has intensified in recent months, as more warehouse and retail workers become part of “The Great Resignation”. This is a phenomenon driven by pandemic burnout and reassessment of life and work.

According to the Labor Department, data shows that a record 4.3 million Americans quit their jobs in August and big box stores and local retailers are struggling to fill positions and store shelves.

Demand is on the rise and retail sales have risen unexpectedly the past few months despite a resurgence in coronavirus cases brought on by the delta variant, which had a big effect on business activity.

Industry leaders say shoppers should consider getting their holiday gifts early this year as ongoing congestion at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach could impact supply over the next few months.

Some people even anticipate the problem will lead to products simply not being available as the holiday shopping season ramps up. In some cases, some shipping delays will likely lead to customers not receiving gifts purchased online until early 2022.

Facebook Changed Their Name, But Why?

The 6th largest company in the world, Facebook, announced their new name as Meta in their recent keynote.

Credit: CNN Turk

On October 21st of this year, Facebook announced that it would have big plans for the future and would reveal them October 28th, we now know their big plans were to change their name to Meta, but that was not all.

In the October 28th keynote they changed their parent company’s name from Facebook Inc. to Meta Platforms Inc. (similar to how Google changed their parent company’s name to Alphabet Inc. in 2015) in order to better describe what they want the future of their company to look like.

They also introduced to the world their idea of something they call the metaverse, the metaverse would be a virtual universe of endless possibilities. Think virtual reality (VR) but you can do virtually anything in it: you can work, you can play, you can hang out, you can sleep, etc.; the idea is very similar to that of Ready Player One. Meta thinks this will be the future of the internet, the next level of immersion.

The metaverse is supposed to be accessible by anyone on any device, so you can connect with your phone to someone who’s in a virtual reality world, and Meta is perfectly fit for that with their arsenal of utilities: Oculus is their foothold into virtual reality, Instagram and Facebook are their social media platforms that can integrate into the metaverse, and Messenger & WhatsApp (the most popular messaging service in the world) allow for seamless messaging and calling in and out of the metaverse.

Meta also believes that the metaverse will be the future of education and learning, putting $150 million into education in the metaverse. Meta is also going to try to build a business infrastructure inside the metaverse, with both digital and physical goods, they believe these digitals goods (outfits, exclusive items, digital property etc.) are going to become important as their physical goods.

As the metaverse is still decently far from becoming fully fledged, Meta is working on making the rules for privacy and commerce. Basically, Meta wants to be the early bird to the metaverse worm, getting a head start on integrating into the future of the internet and is putting absurd amounts of money into getting closer to the concept of the metaverse.

Some of their investments can be seen with their virtual reality company, Oculus, Oculus has taken up 75% of the virtual reality market and is continuing to release bleeding-edge technology, releasing new facial tracking technology along with a suite of new technology with their upcoming VR headset. They are doing this so they can slowly slim down the technology until it is able to be packed into the size of normal sunglasses. Meta is also working on using neural signals to allow you to make commands just using your brain and some small hand gestures.

This does all sound great, but it is also extremely scary, the acceleration at which we are getting to this metaverse we pursue is staggering. With this amount of technology, the biggest companies in the world could have even more of our personal information in their hands.

If we don’t have an active privacy policy that actually protects the consumer, the result of the metaverse could be detrimental to society.

While there are many concerns about this metaverse, this metaverse is going to be an amazing utility, but like all utilities, we have to use it correctly.

An Introduction To Winter Sports

As the Diablos come to an end for Fall Sports, the season for Winter athletics is just around the corner!

The school year is flying by as winter sports are already beginning their season. Basketball, soccer, girls water polo, and wrestling finally get a chance to show off all their hard work that they have been putting in.

Boys Soccer has been working hard. Head Coach Castle’s main goal for the boys is to, “win the South Coast League and go deep into the playoffs.”

In order to prepare for their upcoming season, the boys have been training on a daily basis for the past three months. To truly understand every aspect of the game, they’ve had classroom sessions twice a week to observe film and work on fundamentals.

Castle expressed that one of their main strengths is their ability to organize themselves. However, a weakness he has noticed is that their varsity level is mainly underclassmen who have a lot to learn. On the other hand, they are a bright group of boys who are eager to learn and play.

Girls Water Polo is consistently training in the pool. Despite getting in the chilling water everyday, the girls have been working towards their main goal of winning league and making it to CIF.

Head coach Carla expects the team to continue working hard and to focus. She commented that, “I want all my athletes to remember that all the late nights and early mornings will pay off.”

Carla has strategically implemented training sessions to meet each girl’s needs. She did so by, “assessing each player’s skills. I focused on getting girls back in shape with low intensity conditioning that increased to high intensity as they got back in shape.”

With a lot of newcomers, it was clear that the team lacked fundamental understanding of the sport.  As a new coach for this program, she also recognized that the players were accustomed to a laid back environment.

She is grateful that the players, “all had the drive, loyalty, motivation, and commitment to the team. Players were prepared for high intensity training and new rules and expectations for being on my team.”

The wrestling team has a unique dynamic like no other. Coach Dominguez hopes to see growth for the boys and girls program.

The team is filled with incoming freshmen, new wrestlers, and returning wrestlers. Coach Dominguez mentioned, “we have been active in a preseason conditioning program which has included a weightlifting regimen.”

The team is young as a whole because it is mostly composed of freshmen and sophomores. Dominguez expressed, “the strength of the team lies within our motivation and dedication to undertake the challenges of this tough sport.”

He is thrilled for the season to begin with his dedicated athletes as, “we are developing leaders and ambassadors to the sport of wrestling who will represent Mission Viejo High School with pride and excellence.”

Girls soccer has a great bond with each other. Captain Sarah Roberts commented, “we work really well on the ball so I think it’ll help lead to a pretty strong season.”

Some strengths Sarah has noticed include their passing up top and through the middle, and they work well with their patterns out of the back.

Sarah hopes for the team to accomplish making CIF and to go even farther into it than previous years. She mentioned, “we had an amazing run last year and didn’t stop putting up a fight so I hope we can bring that same energy to the field this year.”

Overall, best of luck goes out to all of these athletes!

Leave November For Thanksgiving

Credit: Courtesy Photo

Christmas is one of the most celebrated holidays and has the most promotions and sales out of the rest of the year. To start celebrating a month prior is a bit overkill though; two months’ worth of Christmas is just too much time and doesn’t allow the actual day of Christmas to be properly celebrated.

As much as I love Mariah Carey and all the Christmas trees in every shopping mall I go to, it gets boring to a certain extent. I’m sure everyone could share my sentiment at least once in their life when the third “All I Want For Christmas” starts playing on the speakers at the mall and there’s nothing better on my mind than strangling whoever is managing the speakers. By the time Christmas rolls around, every Christmas song in the book has been played and it doesn’t even feel like Christmas.

No holiday is celebrated a month in advance like Christmas. I mean there are plenty of Halloween fanatics but I’ve yet to see a single person start trick-or-treating in September. ”Why wouldn’t they?” Trick-or-treating is a tradition meant to be preserved for one or two nights. In a similar way, Christmas is meant to be saved for December.

There’s a lot of different ways to celebrate and I’m not saying any one way is right, but I do know this:

Prolonging Christmas doesn’t do Christmas any good. In fact, I would say that Christmas loses its value by trying to celebrate in November.

A Clue Review: MVHS Drama Takes On The Classic Whodunit Play

Coming back from the pandemic, Mission Viejo High school has finally put on their very first and long-awaited play of the year titled Clue. The play Clue is based on the board game and tells the story of a complicated murder mystery.

Credit: MVHS Drama

Our very own drama class in Mission Viejo High school pulled off what everyone seems to think was an excellent show. Including the students involved in the drama, one participant quotes, “Clue has been a great experience to work on!”

Students in the Drama program claim that it is a fun and inviting environment to be in. A student claims, “Drama is where you learn a lot of new stuff and make lots of friends, and it’s where people are really accepting.”

The story starts out as the main character Wadsworth, brings six people into a mansion. But all six people have been blackmailed by a man named Mr. Boddy. The only way to have Mr. Boddy drop the charges of blackmail is for someone to murder Wadsworth.

As Mr. Boddy leaves, he is suddenly murdered, so now the story begins as the audience has to figure out who murdered who. In the end, everyone was a murderer with one FBI agent in the group of people, who takes all the evidence that he found and takes everyone away.

The actors and actresses’ skills were able to tell an amazing story with their actions and tone. Most people would think that a high school play would be a little cringy or not worth seeing, but the acting was very professional and seemed very realistic. An audience member claims “I feel like Clue was made for the audience to be enveloped in the world the characters are in.”

The play by itself was written in a very intricate way to make sure people didn’t know who was the murderer, or who everyone really was. It was an excellent way to keep people entertained, one person saying, “It’s a great way to keep people on their toes.”

Students who worked on the play obviously put their heart and soul into it. An interview with a drama student claims that practices would take place during classes and tutorials. And after-school rehearsals would last from 3 pm to 5 pm or later. Their hard work evidently paid off as they executed a wonderful performance.

The play Clue was a play that really aims to connect characters with the audience and make them feel like they were there with them. It is an invigorating experience that people would thoroughly enjoy.

We’ve Been Waiting An Eternity: Marvel Eternals

Just over 2 years after the announcement at San Diego Comic Con 2019, Marvel Studios’ Eternals has dropped. Here’s what you should know..

Credit: Marvel Studios “Teaser” Trailer

Marvel Studios’ Eternals has finally been released after it’s long awaited pronouncement, and with the budget of 200 million dollars, and 281 million dollars made as of Sunday, November 14, 2021, there are mixed feelings to say the least.

To sum up the story, the Eternals, consisting of Ikaris, Thena, Sersi, Gilgamesh, Druig, Phastos, Makkari, Sprite, Kingo, and Ajak, are a group of immortal, supernatural beings that were created for the sole purpose of protecting worlds from these monsters called “deviants.”

These “deviants” want to destroy Earth, and the Eternals are supposed to act as a guardian angel for the planet.

After being on the world for 7000 years, by the year 1521, the Eternals have grown exhausted of their mission. Their leader, Ajak, tells them that the deviants have all been eradicated, and that they are free to live a normal life on Earth.

Fast forward to present day, the Eternals had not seen a deviant for the past 500 years, until now. What they do not know, and find out later in the movie, is the even bigger issue. A new celestial is being born and will destroy Earth completely. Now it is up to the Eternals to decide if they are willing to let 7 billion people die for 1 celestial.

Putting their 200 million dollar budget to work, Marvel has not ceased to amaze the audience with their stunning visual effects and CGI once again.

Although Marvel has usually been known to be a universe made for hard core fans, laid back fans, and even grandparents, this movie would not support that statement entirely. Here’s what I mean.

Eternals is a 2 and a half hour movie, with lots and lots of exposition. Very rarely have the Eternals been referenced before in the Marvel universe, if at all, so it can be justified that explanation would be needed.

Additionally, this Eternals movie is a key movie for the next phase of Marvel, as it sets up/opens the door for the rest of the Marvel universe movies, like Black Knight, Fantastic Four, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and Blade.

What I’m trying to convey is, if you are a laid back Marvel fan who watches whatever new movie is out, this might not be the movie for you. Not to say there is no action, but there is more exposition than action.

In short, director Chloé Zhao did well in producing a slower paced movie rather than the average blockbuster Marvel film. She was successful in setting up the next movies in the universe, and opening the door for many possibilities.

Last but not least actors Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, Gemma Chan, and others played their role well in this slower paced, but still action packed Marvel movie.

Turkey Triumphs Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is a very special holiday to countless families. Most people scramble to cook their holiday meals early in order to be prepared in time for November 25th, the feast-filled day which precedes Christmas.

Each family’s Thanksgiving meal is different. However, the most common Thanksgiving foods are turkey, turkey stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, corn, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes, and dinner rolls.

At least some of these foods typically make an appearance in several families’ traditional Thanksgiving dinners, and they’ve been in high demand for this holiday season ever since 1621. Although many staple Thanksgiving dishes are actually considered to not really have been eaten on the very first Thanksgiving, this doesn’t stop the common trend of foods such as pumpkin pie being made on every annual Thanksgiving to this day.

On the first Thanksgiving, foods like venison, wildfowl, corn, bread, porridge, cod, bass, and flint were gratefully shared between colonists and native Americans. Now though, it’s safe to say that these foods have adapted and changed to fit into today’s preferred tastes and appearances.

Venison, or deer meat, seems to have been replaced with turkey. Other more “dated” Thanksgiving servings have also been replaced with more “time-appropriate” foods. As our traditional Thanksgiving meals have evolved, it’s safe to say that there’s quite the debate of which Thanksgiving dish is the absolute best.

Which Thanksgiving dish is triumphant over all the rest? Well, it’s definitely turkey. Which is by far, the most popular and loved dish of all Thanksgiving foods.

Turkeys were first regarded as a uniquely remarkable animal because of William Bradford, a colonist who wrote of how colonists had often hunted turkeys near the time of the very first Thanksgiving. Therefore, the belief of turkey meat being presented at the first Thanksgiving celebration gained lots of traction.

This notion was only encouraged after Abraham Lincoln officially declared Thanksgiving as a national holiday in 1863, which was when American citizens began to frequently feast upon turkey. Thus, the bird earned a permanent place as Thanksgiving’s most well-known icon and manys’ favorite meal.

Not only was turkey popularized as Thanksgiving’s main course for its historical significance, but also its taste. Making turkey widely regarded as the best Thanksgiving dish of all time.

It’s a food for practically everyone, turkey, and the meal can evoke almost any sort of taste with effort. Turkey can be dry, juicy, urban, tangy, anything you could possibly think of, depending on the way it’s cooked.

The plainness of a turkey can be easily adapted into an ethnic taste with some basic seasoning or oiling. So many people love turkey because of its natural tastiness, but also for its ability to be enhanced with flavor.

Perhaps establishing turkey as the best Thanksgiving dish could be seen as underwhelming, or bland. But its place as the best Thanksgiving dish surely is deserved. Turkey is, undeniably, the cultural symbol of Thanksgiving. Of course, not every family will get a turkey for their Thanksgiving, or agree of its superiority over other dishes.

“You can’t have Thanksgiving without Turkey,” Is a rather popular phrase though, that highlights the heavy amount of the population that deems turkey as such a great Thanksgiving dish, that Thanksgiving wouldn’t be the same without it.

Regardless of any turkey haters out there, turkey will forever remain a Thanksgiving icon and a nationally preferred meal for the fall holiday. Turkey’s diversity, history, and its significance to many earns its title as the best Thanksgiving dish.

Is Georgia Turning Blue?

0

Georgia was one of the most, if not the most, important states in this past election as it was one of the major swing states during the Presidential election. This was seen for not only the Presidential election but also the Senate, with Georgia now having two Democratic senators, a very stark contrast from the 2016 election where Republicans edged out the Democrats in the Senate and Trump had a 5% lead.

So why is Georgia, a state that has been won by Republicans for 30 years, turning blue? The main factor leads back to population, and according to a study done by Pew Research in 2020 Georgia’s voter population grew by 1.9 million since 2000 and African Americans accounting for almost half of that.

Joe Biden won the state with 49.5%, which was considerably larger than when Obama and Biden got 47% in 2008. The main reason for this was not only about diversity but also because the number of Caucasians that voted Democrat increased in the last 4 years, both rural Georgia and all of the Atlanta area turning blue. No matter the candidate, these last 8 years the amount of counties that Democrats have won has increased.

Mainly people think Atlanta is the only one steering the ship but the area outside Atlanta is just as vital on what Georgia votes, with almost every county increasing from 10% or more in democratic votes from 2016 to now, without the outside counties, the win in Georgia would not be possible.

Even though Democrats have won both the senate Seats and Georgia’s presidential votes this does not mean that they are completely blue, with the Republican party winning the majority of US House seats. Although Representative Lucy Mcbath won a seat that was held for decades by Republicans prior, and won the reelection; Carolyn Bourdeaux also flipped a House seat.

Although they are not completely blue yet, Democrats winning the Senate seats is still very impactful as it gives a 50/50 split in the Senate, meaning Kamala Harris chooses as the Majority Leader of the Senate.

Stacey Abrams, a former seat in the US House, was also a catalyst for why Democrats are doing so well. She created a group called the New Georgia Project, which encouraged people of color to register to vote. Her political advisor even released “The Abrams Playbook” which gave reasons why Democrats should be focused on the Atlanta area and Georgia as a whole.

Prior to the Republican reign from the 1970s onwards, Democrats ran Georgia and now it seems they are trying to keep it that way with Jacquelyn Bettadapur, who is a chairwoman of the Democratic Party in Cobb County stating, “There’s no going back”.

Georgia is not completely blue yet, but rather in the middle right now. From the trend, we have been seeing it seems that Georgia will become a democratic state but it is still possible that it will return to being a majority Republican state.

So why does all of this matter to California? In the past Georgia has been a swing state and if it is true that Georgia is going blue for good this means that  all the states that usually vote Democrat would equal up to 229 electoral votes, (without accounting the 13 battleground states, excluding Georgia) giving Democrats more of an advantage from the start of the race.

Democrats gaining seats in Georgia for the Senate would allow closing the gap and the US House would be able to keep its Democratic lead. Whichever way you look at it, Georgia’s political climate has a major impact on the United States’ entire political climate.

Diablo Dispute: It’s “Knott” A Bad Idea To Visit Knott’s Scary Farm

Love mazes? Rides? Frights? An overall spooky and  fun time? Then visit Knotts Scary Farm!

Credit: Westcoaster.net

Knotts Scary Farm has always been a classic attraction for Southern Californians. People enjoy the thrill of visiting Knotts at night and engaging with the Halloween spirit.

The Halloween event consists of 27 nights of screams from September 16th to October 31st. They open at 7 pm and  stay open until 1 or 2 am, depending on the night.

Due to the pandemic, it has been a year and a half since the last time Knotts has hosted this Halloween fright fest. People truly missed the thrill, therefore it has gained a great amount of attention from locals.

Some may argue that it isn’t even worth going because of how busy it has been. It is understandable that a crowded environment can make the visit unpleasant, however, why not visit the park on a weekday or Sunday? There are way less people than there are on Saturdays and Fridays which means more rides and less lines.

Others who are against the theme park argue that the ticket prices are overpriced. Put the pandemic into consideration and how they were shut down for over a year. Knotts faced an immense amount of economic struggles with the absence of visitors from the holidays and summer.

They advertised the terrifying theme park attractions with eight new mazes, five sinister scare rides, yummy Halloween themed foods and much more.

Many visitors are attracted to their maze themes. New ones this year include Mesmer: Sideshow of the Mind. This appealing maze dives into the eerie enlightenment of the human mind.

From the depths of an abandoned wax museum lies another new maze: Wax Works. This one spins off of a plastic surgeon who creates a Frankenstein type of doll made from molten wax and “ human flesh.”

The mazes are designed to get the visitors adrenaline rushing, and they do a great job at doing so. It’s truly thrilling to walk through thick fog and anticipate a monster jumping out and scaring you.

A visit to Knotts wouldn’t be complete without one of their famous treats. Knotts offered their famous Boo-fet this year for an additional $40. The “Boo-fet” is an annual buffet they have for Knott’s Scary Farm that offers plenty of perks.

The perks to this is munching with monsters and enjoying their classic Mrs. Knott’s fried chicken, boysenberry pie, and much more. The other advantages include early entry to mazes and rides.

Additional treats that can be found located around the park include the Murderous Midnight Funnel Cake, Decomposing Taco, Petrified Pizza Burger, etc..

The Murderous Midnight Funnel Cake is visually and tastefully appealing. The cake includes eye and teeth gummies on top of a red strawberry drizzle.

This year, there’s nowhere to hide from the infamous scare zones. The ghost town features ghosts lurking through the thick fog, along with creatures that are half human and half animal. Guests are guaranteed to get lunged at by one of those alarming creatures.

On the other side of the park, the Boardwalk is filled with clowns in the CARNEVIL scare zone. If one makes it through that, they will be greeted by the Witches of the Hollow.

Lastly, through the thick fog lies gothic creatures hiding in the shadows and waiting to quickly emerge.

Overall, there are many frightful attractions that are definitely worth a visit.

Venom Got It Right The Second Time: Venom: Let There Be Carnage

The Sony film doesn’t take itself too seriously, which is a good thing.

Credit: ComicBook.com

The original Venom was released in 2018 with, at best, mixed reviews; the critics were not expecting anything special, and the fans were wishing for something decent. Then it was let out to the public, and to everyone’s surprise it wasn’t half bad.

Sure it took itself a bit too seriously than it should’ve, and it contained a lackluster plot with a lack of character complexity, but the original got a couple things right: a great casting, good buddy cop energy between Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) and Venom (Tom Hardy), and a whole lot of computer-generated action. The original was a good watch when you just wanted to see some mindless action.

The movie was already assumed to have a sequel due to the end credits scene in Venom, showing Eddie Brock meeting Cletus Kasady (Woody Harrelson), a locked up deranged serial killer. Kasady ends it by declaring, “There’s gonna be carnage”, an obvious sign of a sequel and a nod to the symbiote that Kasady is linked with in the comics.

The sequel was slated for October 2, 2020 but due to COVID-19, the movie was pushed back to September 24, 2021, and then to October 15, 2021 due to the sudden rises in COVID cases in the US from the delta variant. The good news we did get, though, was that the director was switching from Ruben Fleischer, the original Venom’s director, to Andy Serkis, which meant Serkis could hopefully fix some of the problems in the original film when making the sequel.

Also, Tom Hardy, who played Eddie Brock wonderfully in the first film, would become a bigger part in the production; Hardy co-wrote the story with screenwriter Kelly Marcel, and the two spearheaded the sequel to make sure it was great, The Hollywood Reporter reported, “[Hardy and Marcel] looked at the complaints from critics and examined what audiences liked about the first one, too.”

The sequel capitalizes on the chemistry between Eddie Brock and Venom and takes itself less seriously, leaning into the absurdness of the film, and it has fun with itself. The lackluster plot of the past film is replaced with a well formed plot that displays Harrelson’s spectacular display of Kletus Cassidy and the chemistry the character has between Brock.

The plot is also rather grounded, instead of trying to outdo a fight on a rocketship (what happened in the last film), it worries about Brock’s daily life and working out a good relationship between Brock and Venom. Of course there’s also a serial killer, but he does not feel shoehorned in and makes sense with the relationship they built between Cassidy and Brock.

In the end though, Venom: Let There Be Carnage is a relationship film. Venom and Brock have to work out their differences first before they can fight anyone, and the studio pulled it off as well as they could have. They did limit themselves to less action due to the relationship problems and challenged themselves by trying to juggle the carnage plot and the Venom-Brock relationship.

Overall, the premise of the plot was not the best, but it was executed fairly well; however, the movie is a vast improvement over the last one. The Venom series just needs to find its footing a bit more, so it can work on polishing the premises of the films, but it is definitely one large step closer to that.

Final Score: 6.6/10
