Therapy Pets To Be Allowed At MVHS

Therapy pets are now going to be allowed at Mission Viejo High School to help improve students’ academics and social-emotional well-being.

Starting in the 2022-23 school year, MVHS will have therapy pets available in each classroom for its students.

Scientific research and findings reveal that therapy pets deserve a place in schools. Animals in the classroom provide both physical and emotional health benefits for students.

When students are separated from their friends in classes, they tend to feel less happy and worried as a result. Pets will provide tremendous relief when students are stressed over a quiz or test or even a presentation.

Friendly furry companions are good listeners and won’t make any judgements. Students bond easily with these gentle creatures, helping them feel more connected and confident. This can lead to a reduction of negative behavior and aggression.

The National Institutes of Health found that having animals in classrooms can have a positive impact on learning by directly increasing motivation, engagement, self-regulation, and human social interaction. “We have really noticed the motivation in students wanting to come to school because not only are they learning, they are having a good time with a companion,” says worker Joy Smith for the NIH.

In a recent study by the NIH, it is shown that students with therapy pets at school tend to have better attention and memorization skills. Having a pet in the classroom promotes a positive mood and provides significant anti-stress effects on the body.

The simple act of petting an animal has the effect of lowering blood pressure and heart rate while also lowering stress hormones, like cortisol, and increasing oxytocin. Just being in contact with a therapy pet calms down students when they’re upset and helps keep their anxiety at bay.

Reducing the feeling of anxiety and depression can lead to students actually focusing on learning. Therapy pets won’t provide just stress relief, they will also provide a positive spike in grades and the way students perform and act in their classes. Smith says that “Therapy pets will improve mental health a ton but it will also help improve some students’ grades as well.”

The school will be providing one animal for each class period. Whether that be a dog, a cat, a guinea pig, any furry friend you can think of will be allowed at the school.

Now you may be wondering if you can bring your own pets to school and the answer is sadly no. For everyone’s safety and protection you can not bring your own pets from home.

If you do try and bring your pet you will most likely face detention or even a suspension due to the fact that your pets should not be on campus at any time.

The pets that will be provided are going to be by the school district. These pets will have some sort of special name tag or collar that they must keep on at all times so others know that they will not harm them.

Therapy pets are going to be a big relief for everyone including students and teachers. Now, starting next year, you’re going to ace that next test or quiz with a therapy pet by your side!

After Stepping Down as Head Coach, Coach Johnson Tries a Different Path…

Jason Hatfield
Entertainment Editor

Where is Coach Johnson to go Now?

“It’s nothing against high school sports. you just have to be your own person, you have to go your own way, go your own way,” explains Coach Johnson in his touching going away speech.

Coach Johnson, who has been coaching high school football for 19 years and has been the head coach of Mission Viejo since 2018, recently admitted being head coach is just not not what he thought it would be.

“You know, coaching as an assistant was great and I loved stepping up to become the head coach. I just found myselfunder pressure, It was pushing down on me, pushing down on you, no man asked for,”  Coach admits

Coach Johnson elaborates, “it took a lot of self realization, I was just in my beautiful house, with my beautiful wife, and I had to ask myself ‘how did I get here?’”

Coach Johnson admits that the decision took a toll on him emotionally, but he had to find a way to cope. He explained, “I tried to laugh about it, cover it all up with lies, I tried to laugh about it, hiding the tears in my eyes, cause boys don’t cry.”

It’s an abrupt change, but Johnson rationalizes this change in his life by admitting, “Life is a highway, and I want to ride it all night long. I just realized that I was given one chance, one opportunity, to seize everything I ever wanted. Should I have captured it or just let it slip?”

Coach Johnson explained to his current players that they should keep high hopes during this tough changing time. “Don’t worry, about a thing” the coach choked out, holding back tears, “Cause every little thing, gonna be alright.”

During his final moments of the speech, his players brought up a team poster of the boys winning one of their most important games. After he looked at the photo, Johnson turned to the audience with a smile through all of the emotions and announced, “Look at this photograph. Everytime I do it makes me laugh.”

Now the big question is what is Coach Johson up to next. Coach Johnson declares, “I’m a rockstar, I got my rock moves, and I don’t need you!”

Coach Johnson still appreciates all of the time he spent with the team and the program, ending his coaching career by saying to all of his fans, “Don’t Look Back in Anger,” or at least that’s what I heard him say.

Stay tuned to watch Johnson’s Linkin Park/Beach Boys fusion band “One Step Closer to the Beach,” performing live at SOFI at some point hopefully.

Dating Advice that Will Make your High School Relationship Last Forever

0

Megan Leboff
Staff Writer

Some say it’s foolish to think your high school relationship will last forever, but follow these expert relationship hacks, and they most definitely will.

  • Buy your significant other gifts

When I say gifts, I do NOT mean anything cheesy. Don’t give them little notes, or paper mache tokens of your appreciation. I’m talking about REAL gifts; the ones that cost at least 25 dollars. Don’t have enough money? Get a job. Sacrifice time to spend with your partner, for something they really care about: gifts. In fact, according to science, it is 98.76% likely that if you don’t spend all your money on your partner, that they will lose interest in you. So don’t risk it, and buy your way into their heart.

  • Talk about your exes

Nobody wants a partner who keeps their exes a secret. So what I suggest, talk about your ex all the time. In fact, it should be the main topic of discussion at least 87 percent of the time. If you don’t talk about your ex, It leaves your partner to assume that you are hiding something. So to prove you aren’t still in love with your ex, talk about them to your partner as much as you can.

  • Show your partner that you don’t make mistakes

Nobody wants to date someone who makes mistakes. In fact, it’s our mistakes that make us ultimately unlovable. So in order to counter that, just don’t make mistakes. But what do you do if you make a mistake? It’s simple, just convince your partner that you didn’t. And for bonus points, make your partner think they are the one who made the mistake. Yes, some people might think that that’s “gaslighting” and “a toxic, unhealthy thing to do” but in reality, it’s the healthiest thing you can do. Everyone knows that if you make a mistake, you get dumped. So in order to make your relationship last, convince them that they are the ones who made the mistake. And the guilt you make your partner feel, will end up being the very glue that will hold your relationship together.

  • Communication is NOT key

One common misconception is that communication is the foundation on which a relationship is built. But this couldn’t be further from the truth. To talk about your problems in a relationship, is to acknowledge their very existence, and everyone knows a good relationship should have zero problems. So if you have a problem with an aspect of your relationship, do NOT talk about it with your partner. If anything, it’s probably your fault anyway, so my advice: ignore it until it goes away.

Bye Bye Books…Mission to Ban All Books in Library

0

Madelynn Foulkrod
Staff Writer

All the books that reside within Mission Viejo High’s library have been placed under a very serious ban and are completely forbidden to both students and staff members.

After several months of raging discourse from Mission Viejo civilians, the Saddlecrack Valley Unified district has listened to viral criticisms and deemed all books within the Mission Viejo High library to be despicable, inappropriate, and unnecessary for education; Permanently banning the distribution and withholding of books in general.

Mission Viejo High students have been protesting the offensive presentation of books for quite some time, now. President and founder of the Mission Viejo High anti-book club, Page HateBook, claimed that, “The ban of books is long overdue, and it’s so sad that it took this long.”

Hatebook continued to say, “Everyone’s collected efforts against books really emphasizes the progression of our schools priorities.”

The anti-book club was established by Ms. Hatebook as of August 2021, and she quickly convinced a vast majority of the Mission Viejo High population to join after she exposed the crude nature of books.

Hatebook’s complaints against books involve the sharpness of the paper within books, that pose an evident threat towards human skin, and most importantly, the addictiveness of books.

During Hatebook’s first anti-book campaign, she asserted, “Students can spend days to years reading books. This makes them as addictive, and unsafe as a drug.”

She continued to ask, “Why is Mission Viejo High providing drug access to students?” Hatebook’s controversial arguments eventually served as the driving factor of the book ban, and many argue that she single handedly coerced the Saddlecrack District into finally ridding itself of books.

Vice president of the anti-book club, Ill Literate, recently spoke in place of Ms. Hatebook during a honorary speech acknowledging the book ban, after Ms. Hatebook suffered from an intense papercut while removing books from the Mission library.

Ill Literate began his remarkable speech stating, “There’s, like, no need for books.”

After an anonymous audience member asked “Why,” Ill Literate thoroughly explained, “Well, there’s phones now, duh.”

Although the ban on books in Mission Viejo High incited a mass spread victory amongst all Mission Viejo citizens, a great tragedy soon followed.

Page Hatebook’s papercut proved fatal, and she passed away just after Ill Literates’ celebration speech. At her final moments, it has been said that Ms. Hatebook murmured the words, “My death will mark the beginning of the anti-book revolution.”

During a commemoration held to honor Hatebook, Ill Literate, now president of the anti-book club, said “It sucks that she died, but now we must turn the page..no pun intended.” Ill Literate continues to grieve, but is determined to finish what Hatebook started.

Hatebook’s legacy still manages to inspire people to advocate against books, and her death was considered a major turning point for the anti-book club and their supporters.

Mission Viejo High’s anti-book club has spread infectiously, and now, is the most popular club in not only Mission, but other schools as well. It’s unclear whether or not the book ban will advance further than just a ban in the future, and perhaps, the elimination of all books is soon to come.

Tutorial: Finally A Place To Party

0

Sarah Quiroga
Staff Writer

Mission Viejo High School: a place where students go to become leaders in their community and society. Mission Viejo High School’s mission statement is, “Mission Viejo High School develops students’ highest potential within a rigorous and relevant, standards-based instructional–” Sorry, but no thanks.

How many people actually get anything done during tutorial? What about the people who already finished all their work or the ones who could care less about any of their grades?

High school is meant to be celebrated and if these truly are our “golden years” it’s about time we treated it as such. Now let me tell you about a place you could go to during tutorial for a good time.

ASB has been collaborating for the past 10 months regarding this and has finally come to the conclusion of hosting the party tutorial at room 420 by Mr.Ghirardelli. It will be available every Friday during tutorial and bringing friends is 100% encouraged.

Of course there will be a $10 entrance fee with a football player acting as the bouncer. Food and drinks will be readily available. A corner for karaoke will be provided with an assortment of games and activities alternating every week. Themes for the parties will change every month with the input of students’ opinions.

Other schools, including Trabuco and Laguna Hills,  have already implemented this kind of tutorial as well so it was just a matter of time before Mission agreed to do the same.

Sally Smith from Trabuco High School said, “Tutorial party is definitely a mood lifter for my week and helps to cope with all the tiresome work that school dumps on me.”

All of this is thanks to Mr. Ghirardelli who offered to host the tutorial party at a moment’s notice. Mission Viejo will now have a place for students to have an escape at none other than a classroom.

A word from Mr. Ghirardelli to all the students planning on coming to his tutorial, “I hope I can make your school life a little bit more enjoyable, so of course I jumped at the chance to host this. I look forward to seeing you there.”

Prom is going to be the “Time of Our Lives”

Multiple sources have confirmed that Pitbull will be performing at Mission Viejo High Schools Prom!

The rumors have been circulating around for quite a while now. However, it is finally official that Pitbull will be performing at Mission’s upcoming promon May 14th, 2022!

Many students had been complaining about how Winter Formal was held at school this year when other SVUSD schools hosted their dances at venues such as AV Irvine or Knotts Berry Farm.

Unfortunately, because of Covid restrictions due to the mask mandate being lifted, school officials are expecting covid cases to spike even more.

Rumors have been circulating that masks may be required for this indoor dance which will  be held at the Ocean Institute, Dana Point.

To nobody’s surprise, this has caused a great deal of controversy among Mission students.  Some like the idea of staying safe for Prom while the majority despise the idea of masks coing back.

Most students are tired of wearing them and want to experience Prom without a mask. This whole debate is still up in the air.

Senior Kirra Jones exclaimed, “I literally cannot believe they’re even considering this! I feel like life will never be normal again!”

On the other hand, junior Ben Biscotti claimed, “I feel more safe wearing my mask to keep myself and others from getting sick so I think it’s a good idea.”

To accommodate the strong opinions that many students collectively feel towards this decision, ASB has organized the one and only Pitbull to make a celebrity appearance at MVHS!

Mission has a very special connection as Pitbull’s niece attends the school as a freshman. She wished to remain anonymous, but fortunately she reached out to her uncle and he has agreed to perform for the Diablos!

Pitbull will be performing hit songs such as “Time of Our Lives,” “Timber,”  “Fireball,” “Gasolina,” and more.

Students will not know about this news until the release of the paper. It is bound to be a very big surprise.

However, ticket prices are expected to increase to accommodate for setting up a whole stage and to pay for the backup dancers included in the performance. ASB has very big plans to make this the best Prom in Missions history.

Along with Pitbull, there will additionally be a professional DJ while he is not performing. The show is expected to begin towards the end of the dance so it’ll be a grand finale.

ASB wants this Prom to be the most memorable one yet. Due to the backlash of the previous dance, they promised this one will blow away the rest. From the looks of it, so far it is.

Get ready, Diablos, for this memorable night! Believe it or not, Pitbull has been there, done that.

MVHS Drama’s First Play Without Masks: Almost, Maine

Mission Viejo Drama takes on “Almost, Maine”, a play based around nine short stories about love.

Credit: Megan Mahoney Lighting Design

After a year of semi-remote learning, many students were looking forward to commuting to school everyday to see their friends they haven’t seen in months and to get a sense of normalcy. The students most excited for this return to normalcy were the artists: the musicians, the film students, and the drama department.
With this return to normalcy, though, came some natural creative hindrances. For the drama department, the major obstacle was masks, but they figured out how to make do with what they had, using transparent masks that do not fog up, allowing the actors to express themselves substantially more than they would be able to by wearing an opaque mask. But now, after slowly transitioning back to normalcy, I am glad to say that the MVHS Drama team was able to perform their first performance in two years mask-free, and  the difference is night and day.

To be clear, I am not saying that the actors’ performances were bad when they were wearing the masks. I am just saying that the actors were able to express themselves in their full capacity now and that wearing a mask, no matter if it is clear or not, will still make it substantially harder for you to act and worsen the viewer’s experience. Even if you have a world class audio team there will still be exponentially more troubles with a mask, that is just the way it is.
When I saw MVHS drama perform “Clue on Stage” it was great. I was astonished by how well the crew was able to pull off acting while in a mask, but (logically) there were setbacks due to the actors wearing masks. So I am so glad to see the drama department perform their first show without masks, “Almost, Maine”.
“Almost, Maine”, written by John Cariani, is a play compiling 9 different love-based stories all taking place in the ‘almost’ town (the citizens never organized themselves into a city) T13-R7, but people just refer to it as Almost. Almost is located in Maine, smack dab in the middle in fact, and is disconnected from everything, a classic very small town.

The play’s underlying meaning is a rather simple and sweet one, covering love and disconnection, whether it be disconnection from other towns or disconnection from people, that is covered throughout this play. And when there is disconnection with people those disconnections are mended, showing how love perseveres all, it may seem like love is not always there, but it is.

All the nine stories in the play are about a comedic slice-of-life love story with some including some plot lines that you have to suspend your disbelief to enjoy (ie. in one scene the two people in the scene are literally falling for eachother).

I found the play to be a bit over the top with some parts but I really liked how the actors portrayed their characters, with my personal favorite story being scene 2 “Her Heart”. I also thought that it was really cool that a majority of the scenes were directed by different students and thought that this was the perfect format for them to do something like that in.

The play was nothing groundbreaking, but it was a nice compilation of short stories with great portrayals of those stories. All of the cast really sold whatever love-related idea they were trying to express. It was just a nice, sweet play.

The Spinoff That Didn’t Know What It Was: ‘The Book of Boba Fett’

Judd Karn
Online Editor

The Disney+ miniseries takes a different approach then its predecessor, ‘The Mandalorian’, but they couldn’t decide what they wanted different.

Credit: The Verge

‘The Book of Boba Fett’, which premiered on December 29th, covers the ex-bounty hunter Boba Fett and what happened after his supposed demise in ‘Return of The Jedi’; the series also functions as a continuation of ‘The Mandalorian’ plot. Unlike ‘The Mandalorian’, which is an episodic series with a finale that brings together people from earlier in the season, ‘The Book of Boba Fett’ features an overarching plot that continues throughout all of the miniseries’ episodes.

I would recommend that you watch ‘The Mandalorian’ before this; a multitude of the plot points rely on you knowing things from the aforementioned show, and you may feel like you’re missing something throughout the entire series.

The one major problem with ‘The Book of Boba Fett’ is that most of the time it does not know what it wants to be, the overarching story and the exemplary side plot provide great entertainment but there is one episode that pivots completely from the series; the episode was good, but it did not feature Boba Fett at all. Parts of the episode felt out of place and like they should be on a different show but it did not stray too far from the main plot.
Although there are some holes in the series I think it is still competently put together: the plot is consistently entertaining and intriguing, the action is captivating, and the series maintains the space western tone that George Lucas (creator of Star Wars)emphasized in the original trilogy, especially with Boba Fett.
As for the rest of my opinions, I would not be able to go into depth with them unless I talked about key plot points, so from here on out there will be spoilers:
[SPOILERS AHEAD]
The series starts on Boba Fett escaping from a sarlacc pit, a creature which swallows its victim and slowly digests them with acid for one thousand years; he had been thrown into the pit by Han Solo This backstory side plot, which continues until Chapter 4, provides an enthralling set up for the story.

During the beginning of this backstory there are very few lines of dialogue (due to the fact that the other characters, tusken raiders, do not speak any english), yet the characters still feel well developed.

It does feel a bit mundane in the beginning of the series due to the large amount of exposition but that is reasonable as most miniseries struggle to make exposition interesting, and the dullness is supplemented by some action scenes here and there.

The series, while being true to the original trilogy, still broke out of the mold a decent amount, trying new things; some things stuck, others did not. One thing that did not stick were the pastel floating mopeds that the ‘mods’ (cyborgs) had, they felt out of place and way too vibrant for the arid world of Tatooine, especially since they had no sand to be seen on them.

Many people have stated that their favorite episode was the episode that barely featured Boba Fett, Chapter 5; the chapter centered around the mandalorian, Din Djarrin. While this was one of my favorite episodes, the reason why it is many people’s favorite or second favorite is because it loosely follows the formula of ‘The Mandalorian’ which uses episodic elements that allow for more action each episode, but ‘The Book of Boba Fett’ is not episodic, and so it is likely that you will not have that much payoff and grandiose action.

What is great about Chapter 5 is that it provides that fulfillment of gunslinger action and holds the viewer over to the finale, it just happened to be that the writers chose to focus on Din Djarrin for this episode, although they most likely chose him because he would be in a different setting, a setting where they were able to have a punch ‘em up scene with no consequences to the plot.

I thought the finale was effectively done, it gave us monumental amounts of action, featuring a 17 foot tall beast brawling a walking laser cannon with an energy shield, as well as several other fight scenes varying in size and types of skirmishes. Most plot points were filled up, and not carlessely, we also get to see Boba Fett’s series arc completed, going from a ruthless killer to a man of the ‘sand people’ (tusken raiders) to a good-willed gang leader that is the last survivor of his tribe, and avenges his tribe. By the end of the finale, everything that ‘The Book of Boba Fett’ wanted to do, it did.
So is ‘The Book of Boba Fett’ a perfect miniseries? No, but it is a fairly good one, one that I would recommend to any Star Wars fan, and one that I hope will affect the future Star Wars movies and media for the better.

A summary of what the Diablos have accomplished this past winter season!

Credit: Jimmy Su Photo

Missions athletes are known for being strong and resilient. The winter sports athletes showed off all of their hard work this past season as they fulfilled another successful one.

Our boys basketball team had quite the season. Unfortunately, they did not make it to CIF. However, they faced challenging opponents this past season and won a total of 11 games. The boys defeated Fallbrook, Capo Valley, El Toro, Lincoln, Calvary Chapel, Woodrow Wilson, Temecula Valley, San Gabriel Academy, Woodbridge, Fairmont, and Laguna Hills.

Additionally, the girls basketball team got 3rd in the Sea View League. The girls also beat a total of 11 teams, with those teams being Laguna Hills, Fullerton, Cabrillo, Godinez Fundamental, Rancho Alamitos, Bolsa Grande, St. Lucys, and Capo Valley.

MVHS’s girls soccer finished strong in league as they ended up in second place! The girls battled hard throughout their season as they beat opponents such as El Toro, Dana Hills, and Rosary Academy. Their final record was 5 wins, 8 losses, and 2 tied games.

The girls soccer team also qualified for CIF! The girls unfortunately lost the first round for Division 2 with the final score being 1-0 against Yorba Linda.

The boys soccer program fought vigorously this past season. The division 1 team is headed to CIF as they won 9 games, lost 6, and tied 4 games. The boys were victorious against teams such as El Toro, St. John Bosco, Edison, Huntington Beach, Saddleback, St. Margarets, and Santa Ana.

MVHS has been building a strong wrestling program over the years. This past season they exceeded their goals as a total of six athletes are headed to the CIF Championships. Athletes Donovan Flores, Daniel Dominguez, Zale Ming, Garret Halperin, Marie Pearson, and Janelle Avila will be representing the program!

Girls water polo had a successful season as well. The girls beat rival teams such as Trabuco Hills and Aliso in close one point games. When the girls worked hard together, they were unstoppable.

As the seasons for winter sports comes to an end, spring sports will finally get to debut their hard work that they have been putting in this past preseason.

Track, swim, dive, boys golf, baseball, softball, boys tennis, boys volleyball, and lacrosse will finish off this school year’s athletic season for the Diablos.

Congratulations to the athletes from winter sports for representing the Diablos well, and best of luck to the athletes who will be representing spring sports!

Celebrating Valentine’s Day through music and joy at Mission Viejo High School.

Credit: Elle

Valentine’s day, the time of year when flower prices go up and people spend a little bit extra on the people they love. While there are many ways people have celebrated Valentine’s Day, whether it be showering someone with chocolates and jewelry, Mission hosts their own event that is much cheaper, but, of course, more special.

Mission’s way of celebrating Valentine’s day is their annual Valentine Grams, hosted by the school’s choir program. This year, it takes place from February 2nd to the 9th with delivery beginning on the 7th and ending around the 14th.

The way it works is that a student can purchase a gram for $5 and fill out a form listing the name of the person they want to send it to, the recipient’s 2nd period teacher, and the teacher’s room number. Then, on one of the days of delivery, choir, specifically, chamber, will go into their 2nd period class and sing a small part of a song to them in front of the class.

The songs that were chosen this year were “Just The Way You Are” by Bruno Mars and “Electric Love” by Børns. Usually, the choir class performs more songs but because of time constraints this year, they were only able to do those two songs with other potential songs being “You Belong With Me” by Taylor Swift and “Adore You” by Harry Styles.

The limited number of songs this year isn’t the only difference from past years of Valentine Grams. There is a significant drop of students in the class meaning that the balance within the chamber choir is odd because there are not enough people with low voices to sing the low parts in songs.

Despite this, Shelby Mills, the events coordinator, excitedly shares that while most people sign up for Valentine Grams to embarrass their friends, it is a nice way to “spread love and positivity around Valentine’s Day.”

Even if you don’t have someone you can celebrate it with, “Valentine Grams is really just a fun event to bring some spirit into the classrooms through music. It’s a fun way to show love to your friends, teachers…and for all of us choir kids too. Plus, it’s good for promoting the program, especially after COVID,” explains Chan Trinh.

As vice president of the choir class, Trinh and choir council president, Caleb Smith, make a spreadsheet with all of the orders and organize them by room numbers. Then, they split the choir into two groups: upperclassmen and lowerclassmen (with a few exceptions) and split the orders by the buildings (200s, 300s, etc).

Additionally, Trinh spends most of her time prepping with her choir group by helping them learn the music and teaching it to the class. Being a senior, it was really cool and exciting to “see one of the pieces I’ve arranged being put together. Usually, Mrs. Norris (the choir teacher) does all of this, but the valentines are strictly student run, so to be in that position is really cool,” she adds.

While this is the only year Trinh has actually done the grams (because of COVID last year), she recalls her favorite and most memorable part of doing the grams is singing in front of her friends. “Many of them I don’t have classes with, and being able to just sing for me, even for only 30 seconds, means a lot since we’ll be far apart after this year.”

Even though students mainly buy the grams as a joke to their friends, it is another way for choir students to do what they love and spread happiness and fun in the middle of the school year.
