If you’ve had a rocky start to the new year, or even if you’re just looking for a way to have a more positive mindset, practicing meditation may be for you.

You’re probably tired of hearing meditation and breathing exercises being exhausted by counselors and the internet alike. Though it may seem overrated, and it won’t fix all of your problems, meditation is a very useful habit for busy and non-busy people alike.

The goal of using a meditative method of your choice is to train your brain to pay attention to your environment in the present moment, as well as achieve mental clarity and emotional stability.

Most people don’t know that there are multiple types of meditation. There are many ways that you can go about it, and you should never feel like you have to conform to a specific type.

First of all, the easiest way for most beginners to get started is through guided meditation. Having somebody else instruct you on when and how to check your breathing and when to let your mind wander will help you to get the feel for it if you’ve never tried it before.

There are many guided meditation videos online, along with podcasts and free mobile apps. One of the most well known apps is called Headspace. There is a show based on the app on Netflix called “Headspace Guide to Meditation”. Some other apps include Calm, Insight Timer, Aura, Inscape, and Smiling Mind.

If you can’t sit in a quiet place and participate in a 10+ minute meditation, mindfulness meditation can easily be done wherever you are and almost whenever. It is a great way to ease anxiety and to focus, especially if you are busy and feel overwhelmed.

To practice mindfulness, all you have to do is to take a moment, close your eyes, and take deep breaths while observing your thoughts and emotions without judging them. .

In the case that you have more time, drawing your attention to where you are can be done by performing a body scan. A body scan usually only takes five minutes or less.

Sit in a comfortable position, then start by paying attention to the way that your body feels, starting from the top of your head to your toes. If you notice tension in any areas, you may be tensing your muscles due to stress and need to relax your body more.

Other types of meditation besides for guided and mindfulness include transcendental, Vipassana, loving kindness, chakra, and yoga meditation.

Transcendental meditation is when a person repeats a mantra in a certain way for 20 minutes twice a day, the goal of Vispassana meditation is self-transformation, the focus of Loving Kindness is to direct well wishes towards others, Chakra meditation draws attention to the centers of energy in the body, and practicing yoga meditation requires balance and concentration.

Considering its accessibility and the numerous physical and mental health benefits that meditation offers, it is worth a try for anyone who is looking for some more peace in their life. With all that may be going on in your life or the world around you, it is important to remember to always take care of your mind.

High School Relationships are OVERRATED

With the month of February being around, it seems that more high school couples arise. The schools take advantage and set up grams and goodies for a price most students can afford. Yet a week after, their relationship“ is in shambles.

Of course, this is normal for teens, who should be doing their math homework and studying for their tests, to have relationships at this age. Nonetheless, the relationships are horrible and overrated.

Not to sound like the grinch who’s upset others are happy but these relationships seem like a waste of time. While the average relationships last about a year, high school relationships usually last a couple of weeks.

Now usually this happening once or twice isn’t a big deal, short relationships are bound to happen sometimes. However this is like a weekly thing for high schoolers seeking a relationship. This may be because they just felt pressured to have a relationship at this time.

With many students believing this is the right time to date, others may feel the need to do so too. And thus, creates a cycle of relationships that’s overall not worth it.

Another reason these relationships are down right horrendous is that the high schooler now focuses on their relationship instead of their studies.  This isn’t necessarily bad until their grades drop. At this point school is just a giant dating area.

While focusing on the relationship, the high schooler might miss hanging out with friends. With their significant other, their time is sacred and usually is spent with them instead. That would then distance the student from their friends, missing out on their teenage experiences.

Although this can sound hopeless, these types of relationships just don’t last after the school years. People don’t usually think about what they would do after graduation and don’t picture what their partner wants to do. While in highschool, you can very easily say that the students are not mature enough at the time to do so.

Studies show that only two percent of high school relationships make it to marriage. And this doesn’t include the chance of divorce. But don’t have your hopes up, keep speed dating your way into a good relationship until you find the right one.

Things I Shouldn’t See on Valentines’ Day

The one day of year where it is socially acceptable to stalk your crush with anonymous notes and letters: Valentines’ Day. Here’s the thing, it’s not bad to be lovey-dovey with your significant other. Showing off the person you love to the world is of course something that some people want to do, but honestly not many people really care.

Valentines’ Day is meant to be shared with the person(s) you love, and shouldn’t be used to flaunt the person(s). A healthy amount is good but I don’t think the goal is to try to show off but to spend time and appreciate the person. If that person feels appreciated by being shown off then that’s fine, but the priority should be loving the people around you and being reminded of the special people in your life. Now here are some things that I should not see on Valentines’ Day.

Valentines’ Day isn’t the problem itself- it’s the people who pretend to be in love for the sake of public views. It’s not the affection that I’m against, it is the annoying people who haven’t experienced love being in relationships for the sake of trying to pretend to be in love. Casual relationships may appeal to some people, but Valentines’ Day is meant to commemorate and celebrate those who have gone through thick and thin together. If you fall into the latter category then congrats to you, I respect you so I apologize if I somehow insult you with the following Valentines’ Day pet peeves of mine.

Many students have fallen victim to the random and inconvenient displays of affection that highschool students tend to display. A couple’s PDA has nothing to do with me and no one will care as long as they don’t do it at such an unreasonable moment- especially in the middle of the halls when people are just getting out of class. If I had a nickel for every time I ran into a couple who stopped right in front of me to hug I would have two- it is not a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice. Perhaps I only say this due to my biases against high school relationships, but this is an opinion article so screw your opinion mine is the one you’re actually reading.

Love letters aren’t the vibe anymore, I’m sorry. The idea of someone I don’t even know, haven’t interacted with, never talked to– trying to profess their feelings for me via a paper note isn’t something I would consider romantic. If anything I would get creeped out, especially since I don’t have many close guy friends. Not that anyone does, but if you like me then say it to my face! Like what’s the worst thing I say to you? No? Ok well then that means you have all the Valentines’ Day discounted chocolate to console you. Win-win for everyone.

Oh, and another thing I should not see on Valentines’ Day- Christmas lights. This is dedicated to that one neighbor down the street who still has yet to put down their light-up snowman and Christmas lights still hanging on their garage. What are you doing? Why? You’ve had two months to take down your lights and you still sit proudly on your porch. Humble yourself and take down those dang decorations. Respectfully.

Is Valentine’s Day overrated? Yes.

Hurting hearts, wallets, and relationships since day one

Every single year it happens. The day where stores sell overpriced flowers and sugar chalk hearts that tell you what to say.

The day where people don’t want to pay full price on a stuffed animal and buy $1 chocolate. Yes, the day where people shove their tongues down each other’s throats- the dreadful Valentine’s Day.

People usually look forward to this day with their heart shaped balloons and cheap scented cologne but let’s be honest, the day itself is very overrated.

Call me the grinch of Valentine’s Day but It’s literally like the who-villes during Christmas. People just buy, buy, buy and throw it away the next week.

They buy stuff and supposedly it’s romantic, but what’s the difference between buying it on that day and any other day of the year. Just so that they can put it on their story and brag about what their partner got them. Especially at school. It’s not practical.

Yeah, I get it, you love your partner very much but just because you love them doesn’t mean you need to buy these huge balloons acting like you’re in a parade.

Speaking of, people turn a day about love and affection into a competition about who can show off the most. Its mostly things about who got the most expensive things, or who made a reservation into that one restaurant that has a very long wait time with dishes you can’t even pronounce correctly.

I’ve witnessed people competing over whose boyfriend got better things or what they did that was ”better” than the other person. Then people start complaining that their ”significant” other didn’t get them this one thing and it makes you wonder what the point of Valentine’s Day is supposed to show.

Another problem that this day has, the pressure to find a valentine. Everywhere I go I’m reminded about it. I’ll be watching TV, listening to the radio, or even at the store, and I will see or hear ads promoting getting a valentines and what to get them.

It’s even worse if you go to school because even the schools pressure you into finding a valentine, and if it’s not the school then it’s the students that pressure you. The amount of times that I’ve heard people talking about getting a valentine, has gotten to the point where it’s annoying hearing about it.

The worst thing about this day though, would have to be the proposals. The amount of people that have a nice dinner then have the ring hidden somewhere and propose to their significant other is the most annoying thing ever.

I wouldn’t be surprised if there hasn’t been a situation where there were more than three people proposing at the same restaurant. If you think about it, these people are putting their knees on where people’s shoes walk on and who knows where their shoes have been.

What if they get rejected, then what? You’ve just humiliated yourself in front of a bunch of people. The people who don’t get rejected when proposing on Valentine’s Day, I’m happy for them, but don’t be surprised if your “special” anniversary is being shared with hundreds of other couples.

How hard is it for people to be original instead of feeding into society’s low standards of proposing. Just shows how overrated it is if lots of people think it’s a good idea to propose on that day.

So the next time you get excited about getting cheap chocolates and wilted flowers on Valentine’s Day, think about if you and your partner fit in any of the categories. If you do, then you need to rethink your life choices.

How to Be the Best Gift-Giver This Valentine’s Day

Read ahead if  you’re still looking for the perfect gift for your valentine this February.

Valentine’s day is a great opportunity to express your appreciation for and spend time with the people you most care about. However, it can be stressful if you are planning to get a gift for a certain person(s) and just can’t come up with something that you are certain they will enjoy.

The good news is that there are many creative gift ideas that you can personalize and that will get big smiles from your valentine.

First of all, handmade gifts are perfect if you want to add your own heartfelt touch to your gift. Baked treats, like peanut butter blossoms, are easy to make and can be made in large quantities to give to all of your favorite people.

To make peanut butter blossoms, simply bake peanut butter cookies and press a hershey kiss into the center of each one right after you take them out of the oven.

Another homemade gift that your loved one is sure to enjoy is a surprise gift box. To make this unique gift box, gather two boxes, and make sure that one can fit inside the other with some extra room. Cut each of the four corners of the smaller box so that it can lay flat, then cover it in decorative paper.

For a personal touch, you can also add pictures to each of the four inner sides of the smaller box. Next, place easter grass or tissue paper in both boxes, then add small gifts like candy, leaving the center of the smaller box for the main gift (money, gift card, jewelry, etc.)

While your valentine will definitely appreciate a material gift, they might especially enjoy tickets/plans for an experience.

As COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted over time, more bands have gone back on the (non virtual) stage. If your loved one is a music lover, you can check to see if any of their favorite artists will be playing in town in the next several months.

An easier option for this type of gift is to take your valentine out to a movie. Maybe throw in some candy and popcorn with the tickets for an added surprise.

A cliche yet timeless gift for friends, family, and significant others alike is flowers. To make the gift last longer, consider buying a potted plant for them to see the blooms over and over again. Succulents are also a great gift idea for anyone, because they can be cheap and are very low maintenance.

Lastly, despite all of the possible gifts that you can give, nothing beats a heartfelt note, or even just telling your favorite people how much they mean to you. There is no greater way to celebrate this holiday than by making sure the people in your life know that they are loved.

Spend time with those closest to you this Valentine’s, and remember how priceless great people are every day of the year.

Russia and Ukraine Conflict Explained

A detailed explanation of the tensions in Russia and Ukraine

Credit: EMPR media

The first thing that you have to understand is that the tension between Russia and Ukraine is built upon two main reasons. One: Ukraine is a matter of strategic importance to Russia. Ukraine is quite a big country that finds itself right in between the European Union and Russia, making it highly valued territory.

Two: there have been years of territorial conflict between Ukraine and Russia. And to fully understand that conflict, we have to rewind time a bit.

Ukraine was once part of the Soviet Union, and after it’s fall, Ukraine became a separate country, officially declaring itself independent on 24th August 1991.

Geographically, Ukraine borders Russia, so naturally, the east side of Ukraine (the side bordering Russia) is heavily mixed with Russian and Ukrainian culture and political ideals.

Ukraine as a whole can essentially be broken into two political parties: those who support westernization/joining European forces, and who are typically more liberal, and those who are pro-Russia and are typically more conservative. The Ukrainian president from 2010-2014, Viktor Yankovitch, was the latter, and was particularly popular in the east.

However, after a few corruption charges and political “blunders”, by 2013 Yankovitch’s popularity was rapidly declining. So, in an effort to counter that,  Yankovitch agreed to sign an accord that would officially declare Ukraine as part of the European union. Keep in mind this was an extremely critical agreement that had major support from the Ukrainian public, and was practically guaranteed to increase his approval ratings.

However, on November 21, 2013, the government went back on its promise at the last minute, and suspended the signing of the European Union Ukraine association agreement, causing major civil unrest in the country.

The unrest started as protests, then turned into riots and civil disobedience, and finally turned into a movement called the Euromaidan movement. During this period, Ukrainian society fell into chaos, and  Yankovich ended up fleeing the country.

Amid the chaos, Russia strategically took control of Crimea, a Ukrainian Peninsula, officially declaring it independant on March 16, 2014. This caused uproar in the Ukrainian government, calling it a “violation of international law.”

Russia responded by saying a majority of the soldiers that took control of Crimea were volunteers and rebels from Ukraine itself. In addition, Vladamir Putin, the prime minister of Russia, made a statement saying that Russia will support the rights of Russian speakers in Crimea and South Ukraine.

This feeling of connectedness with Russian-speaking Ukranians and Russia caused a major ethnic division in Ukraine, creating regions on the east side of Ukraine called donetsk and luhansk (collectively known as the Donbas region) where fighting between Ukraine and Russia/rebel forces began.

Many reports say Russia supplied the Donbas region with heavy military equipment that was allegedly used to shoot down a passenger airplane over Ukrainian airspace, which crashed in the Donbas region.

That crash became a matter of international dispute between Russia and the United States/European Union, and Ukraine became the battleground. NATO even got involved, and in April 2016, NATO announced that they would support Ukraine, despite their lack of membership. And in October 2018 Ukraine joined the United States and seven other North Atlantic Treaty Organization countries in a series of large-scale air exercises in western Ukraine.

For five years this war raged on, even after multiple attempts at a cease fire agreement. Then, in 2019, the current Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, was elected. He agreed to implement the Steinmeier formula, an alternative to prior agreements, that said once Russia removed all their troops from the Donbas region, and there was a complete ceasefire, then Ukraine would grant the Donbas region self-governing status, and local elections would be held. Essentially, Ukraine wanted the Donbas region free of Russian military influence, before any elections were held.
Russia responded by saying “the elections and autonomy, then everything else.” So in essence, even though they would be given the land they have been fighting over, Russia refused to remove their military power from the region.

If Ukraine had signed the agreement, despite Russia’s lack of cooperation, it would be a major risk. For starters, Ukraine would be rebuilding and supporting an autonomous zone, whose vast political power was Pro-Russia, helping Russia be in charge of domestic affairs. Additionally, the public will see it as a concession to Russia, causing even more protests and riots.

As a result, Ukraine is trapped, and with its current military power, Ukraine cannot compete with Russia for the Dombas territory, so they would require help from NATO.

Surprisingly, although NATO has offered its support, there is little support within NATO to grant membership to Ukraine. This is because NATO knows that Russia is already inside Ukraine, so the moment they grant membership, this will wage a full scale war against Russia, possibly causing what some have described as WWIII.

As the high-stakes diplomacy continues, Russia has kept up its military pressure, while NATO allies have been deploying troops and working on new plans for a longer-term presence in Eastern Europe; to deter Russia, not defend Ukraine.

Another hint of averting war came from Ukraine’s president, who said Monday that his country might have to abandon the possibility of joining NATO — one of Russia’s biggest demands. And while Russia has repeatedly said it has no plans to launch an invasion, they have continued to add to their arsenal. Last week, when asked about the possibility of invasion, Vladimir Putin refused to rule out the possibility.

Black History Month

Vanessa Mendoza
Staff Writer

Black History month is an annual celebration of achievements of African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. History.

Credit: amNY

Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating Black history.

The story of Black History Month begins in 1915, half a century after the thirteenth ammendment abolished slavery in the United States. That September, Carter G. Woodson and the prominent minister Jesse E. Moorland founded the ASNLH, an organization dedicated to researching and promoting achievements by Black Americans and other peoples of African descent.

Woodson first had the idea of this month-long celebration. Woodson was born in 1875 to newly freed Virginia slaves. He later earned a Ph.D. in history from Harvard University. He worried that Black children were not being taught about their ancestors’ achievements in American schools in the early 1900s.

Known today as the ASALH, the group sponsored a National Black History week in 1926, choosing the second week of February. The event inspired schools and communities nationwide to organize local celebrations, establish history clubs, and host performances and lectures.

In the decades that followed, mayors of cities across the country began issuing yearly proclamations recognizing Black History Week. by the late 1960s, thanks in part to the civil rights movement and a growing awareness of Black identity, Black History week had evolved into Black History month.

President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month in 1976, calling upon the public to, “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”

Today, Black History Month is a time to honor the contributions and legacy of African Americans across U.S. History and society. From activists and civil right pioneers such as Harriet Tubman, Marcus Garvey, Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, and Rosa Parks to leaders in industry, politics, science, culture, and more.

Since 1976, every American President has designated February as Black History Month and endorsed a specific theme.

The theme for 2022 focuses on the importance of Black Health and Wellness. This theme acknowledges the legacy of not only Black scholars and medical workers, but also other ways of knowing throughout the African Diaspora.

The 2022 theme considers activities, rituals, and initiatives that Black communities have done to be well.

In order to foster good health and wellness, Black people have embarked on self-determination, mutual aid, and social support initiatives to build hospitals, medical and nursing schools, and community clinics.

Scores of events across the country – in cities, in communities, on college campuses, and more – are scheduled for this month. For example, at Texas A&M University, the college held the Black History month Kick-off on February 1, hosted by the Black Student Alliance Council (BSAC).

Today, Black History Month is celebrated all around the world and it is a great way to show respect to those of the African American community and descent.

Band Spotlight: Days of View

Days of View’s logo

Hailing from Mission Viejo, Days of View is a fresh new rock band that must be heard. Pulling influences from classic rock from the 1960’s and 1970’s as well as from punk, the band has dialed in a fresh sound that feels both at touch to the past and relevant today.

The members of the band are Nathan Jerue on drums, Ian Winn on Bass, Blake Lumley on Keyboard, Alex Kunze on guitar, and Lucas Villenueva on guitar. While each of them play different instruments, they all participate in vocals to an extent. Songwriting, though, is a collaborative project between all of the members.

Currently, the band has a single titled Things Change as well as a debut EP titled Practice Room Sessions Their current discography heavily leans on their punk sound, with covers of both Basket Case by Green Day and Blitstreig Bop by the Ramonnes. Even then, the band isn’t afraid of contrast with keys and acoustic guitars supplementing the more aggressive angst of their chugging electric guitars and drums.

Vocally, the band goes for a far more melodic approach seen by bands of the typical Indie or alternative rock scenes as opposed to the more common hardcore sound.

Take a song like Things Change, their debut single, beginning with the underspoken guitar and piano intro that soon leans into the more stereotypical punk instrumentals accompanied by Lucas’ clean and crisp vocals. The song falls back into the pocket at the beginning when the bridge slows the song down until launching off into a fast-paced guitar shred for the outro.

Another interesting song from the band is their track Creep in the Night, their intro from their EP Practice Room Sessions. The verses are driven by Nathan’s surf rock inspired beats, a good change of pace to their more heavy chorus’.

The band has two covers on the tailend of their EP which gives insight into their influences, without fully giving away their sound. Basket Case feels pretty true to form, led by Ian on vocals and a heavy bass feel throughout.

The band has plans for an LP in the summer to finally condense all of their new ideas and material into a full-length record. The group recently performed live at Keno’s restaurant in Anaheim and are planning on playing in Laguna Beach on March 18th.

All of their material is available on Apple Music and Spotify so make sure to check out Days of View.

MVHS has a fun Winter Formal planned for the end of February, so here are some of the details.

Credit: OC Parks

Well, there are a lot of things happening at our high school, including the soon-approaching 2022 MVHS Winter Formal. The event will be taking place on Saturday, February 26th at the MVHS campus, and the dress code is semi-formal. It will also start at 7 PM.
Tickets will be up for sale on Monday, February 7th, and will be available in the campus Student Store, as well as the online Web Store. A discount on the tickets will be given to those who have an ASB card. An ID card is needed to purchase the tickets, and also for admission into the dance. However, free tickets will be given out to those who have the most-liked picture on the @mvhs.proposal account on Instagram, where students send in photos of their proposals.

→tip from the writer: I’ve noticed that the most-liked Instagram photos tend to be funny. So when you’re about to propose to that person you’ve had your eye on, think of something that will make them laugh! Chances are, it will make the Instagram population of our school laugh, too.

After much anticipation, the mysterious Winter Formal theme was finally revealed. The theme for this year’s winter formal is “Lights, Camera, WOFO.” The Hollywood-inspired theme was revealed in a video posted on the @mvhs.asb Instagram account when some of the ASB students went to Los Angeles for the big reveal.
“What in the world am I supposed to wear to a “Lights, Camera, WOFO” dance?” you may be wondering. Well, this theme actually allows for a lot of creativity in your attire. For a Hollywood look, go for something bold and outrageous. Maybe wear something with sparkles and shine, or something with stars (get it? stars? lol). Colorful suits and ties, shiny jewelry, bright, sparkly dresses… trust me, there are options out there.

→tip from the writer: Wearing something red-carpet-ready is a must, but make sure you’re also comfortable in your outfit (especially those shoes!). When I went to the Homecoming dance, I got these beautiful black heels and they made me super tall. But when I got there, I had to take them off and my friend ended up carrying them in his pocket the whole night. Wear comfy shoes, please, you’ll thank me later.

There’s also dinner to consider. Going on a romantic dinner with your date before the dance is a high school tradition. But as teenagers, it’s hard to find somewhere nice that doesn’t leave you broke afterward. So, some of the best pre-Winter Formal dinner options are, in my opinion, Cheesecake Factory, Avila’s El Ranchito, California Pizza Kitchen, Olive Garden, and Sushi Ramen House. And of course, you could go to In-n-Out, because that’s what a hamburger’s all about.

→tip from the writer: For you fellow vegetarians and vegans who always struggle with eating out and ordering from restaurants, try Veggie Grill! Their totally vegan menu has a ton of delicious options, and your meat-eating friends will probably enjoy it, too.

Overall, this Winter Formal should be pretty fun. Whether going with a date, a friend, or alone, I hope you have an amazing time!
