“Halloween Kills”: Go or No?

With a budget of $20 million, a release date set for October 15, 2021, and the 12th movie of the franchise, director David Gordon Green has delivered another thrilling, yet comedic Halloween movie.

Credit: Poster via Universal Pictures

Out of the 12 movies, actress Jamie Lee Curtis has returned for her 7th edition of Halloween, playing character Laurie Strode. Other characters include James Jude Courtney as Michael Myers, Kyle Richards as Lindsey Wallace, Anthony Michael Hall as Tommy Doyle, and Judy Greer as Karen Nelson.

Similar to prior movies in the franchise, there is little plot to this movie; however, Laurie Strode is a stand-by character, compared to her earlier roles of the protagonist.

Continuing sheer minutes after the first Halloween movie of David Gordon Green’s reboot trilogy, Michael has somehow survived the house fire that ended “Halloween” (2018). With this continuation, it allowed the director to immediately jump into action without the need of background development.

Some could argue that the movie is a flatline of events, with no rising action or climax. Others will disagree.

The main buildup of events is when Michael goes around to different houses murdering people, as he has always done. The climax is when Judy Greer, played by Karen Nelson, lures Michael out.

In terms of creativity, the directors haven’t gone with anything too new. Same Michael Myers outfit, except for the burnt mask. Same music, same setting. Even though these elements are all the same, it never ceases to amaze the audience, including me, when watching.

As for the tone of the movie, it has differed from its first of the franchise back in 1978. The movies started off as very serious, dark, and creepy. Not to say that it is not serious and dark, but the directors, intentional or not, have managed to turn the movie into an almost comedic fashion.

With moments that will make you question the character’s thought process, or just the sheer brutalness of Michael Myers, you will be laughing at one point during the movie.

I couldn’t recommend this movie for all groups and people, because not everyone would like it. I could only recommend this to certain groups.

The first group I would recommend this to would be people that like gory movies. If you love movies where the antagonist is covered in blood at all times, then this is definitely the movie for you.

The other group that I would recommend this movie to are people that like horror movies with some humor in it. Like I’ve mentioned before, Halloween Kills is a thriller with so much killing and impractical actions that you will find it funny.

If you were to ask someone if they believe that the writer of Halloween Kills did their job successfully, I would almost guarantee they would say yes.

Halloween Kills isn’t necessarily a movie that has a powerful theme or  a definite plot. But that’s not what the fanbase expects or wants. They want classic Halloween about Michael Myers and what he does best. Killing.

The Labor Shortage: What It Came From and What it Means For You

Hiring is much weaker than expected amidst the aftermath of COVID-19 with millions of jobs remaining unfilled, but the shortage could be a huge advantage for high school students

I’m sure you’ve seen them around. The big “We’re Hiring!” signs hung up on the windows of every business in town. But the question is, why so many? Where did all the workers go?

The COVID-19 pandemic has undoubtedly caused major disruptions in economies globally, the department of labor saying it has caused 10 million job openings in the country. But all these job openings have people wondering: why can’t the people who were laid off due to covid fill those jobs?

The answer lies in the workers themselves. Research shows that most people in the US want to do something different with their lives than what they were doing before the pandemic. The Washington Post said, “…66 percent of the unemployed had ‘seriously considered’ changing their field of work, a far greater percentage than during the Great Recession.”

One common misconception is that workers aren’t coming back to work because the “generous” stimulus checks and unemployment payments have given them all the money they need. But research says otherwise.

Over labor day, 7 million Americans lost benefits, and yet there was no considerable hiring boost in September.

So what are businesses doing to help bring in workers? Well, in order to attract workers, businesses have begun raising their wages and creating incentives.

For example in the hospitality industry, wages are up 18 percent, with Washington Post’s Heather Long calling it one of the biggest labor transformations since ww2.

Plus, chains like McDonald’s and Taco Bell are offering cash bonuses and other perks for people who apply in order to fill thousands of open jobs.

So what does this mean for you? High school is a time when most students will get their first job, and gain the experience that will help them into the next step of their lives.

And with businesses desperate for work, now is the perfect time to apply. Not only are you more likely to get hired, but most businesses are also offering competitive wages, which is a luxury you may not have had two years ago.

For example, Starbucks in the gateway center on Alicia parkway is looking for workers. Starbucks pays $14-20 an hour plus tips, and offers benefits such as 401(k), a Flexible schedule, Employee discount, and paid time off. It is a great first job that teaches how to quickly process and remember complicated orders, improve customer service skills, and learn the ins and outs of a workplace.

Other jobs in and near Mission Viejo that are hiring include Sno2Go, Taco Bell, Wendys, Kohl’s, Yogurtland, Clair’s, Shake Shack, Five Guys, McDonald’s, and Denny’s.

To apply, many of these companies have online applications on their website, which allow you to submit your application virtually. However, not all companies offer online applications, and some will require you to pick up an application in-store.

Either way, now is the perfect time to fill out your application and gain some much-needed experience in the work industry, and not to mention make bank in the process.

COVID: A trick and not a treat

Death, fear, and uncertainty hung in the air last October where coronavirus (COVID-19) cases were surging in California. Many lives were ruined as people lost jobs, were no longer able to see their family/friends for the holidays, or have lost a loved one.

While it may be impossible to bring back the dead, California residents can now celebrate (semi-normally) Halloween this year.

On CNN’s State of the Union this week, Dr. Fauci proclaimed that, “I think that, particularly if you’re vaccinated, you can get out there and enjoy it.”  Of course safety precautions will have to be taken as COVID-19 is still here, but with about 60% of the population being fully vaccinated, it is possible for people to participate in Halloween celebrations.

Dr. Fauci further emphasized the importance of getting vaccinated when you are able to, especially when looking at the majority of trick or treaters who are mainly ages 12 or below that are not eligible for the vaccine yet. With that being said, there are ways for people to celebrate it safely.

The Los Angeles County of Public Health has published a guide for families and individuals about safety measures that can be taken during Halloween that includes slight modifications to the usual activities.

They suggest that for people giving out candy to trick or treaters, it would be best to use tape lining up your doorway to help distance the trick or treaters or to create a trick or treating station outside where the kids can easily grab the candy and go.

Additionally, there are other recommended guidelines such as keeping gatherings small with people you know, avoiding indoor places, and wearing a mask whether or not you are outside trick or treating. That goes to say that costume masks are not substitutes for an actual mask.

Although precautions are highly recommended and may seem horrible to some people, many others have found ways to work around them and enjoy the holiday. For instance, Yu Xin Cheng, a senior, is going to go and host a small backyard gathering with her friends.

“I missed celebrating Halloween last year because of the pandemic, so this year I wanted to do something big but still keep it safe with the pandemic still raging on,” Cheng shares.

She regretfully acknowledges that while this isn’t what she usually does every year, “I’m still really excited for Halloween and I think that it will be just as fun and festive as the last few years.

However, Halloween doesn’t have to be limited to just outdoor gatherings. A junior, Amelia Chang, isn’t sure what she is going to do but says that, “I might invite a couple of my friends over and watch a couple of movies and eat candy.”

Even though it is not as festive as it was pre-pandemic, it is something compared to last year. Last year, COVID-19 cancelled everyone’s plans for the holiday where there were no vaccines available and the virus served as a dangerous risk.

Luckily with the vaccines, many activities that didn’t seem possible are doable this year and hopefully with people following the guidelines and more people getting vaccinated, the winter holidays won’t look as bad.

The Huntington Beach Oil Spill

An oil spill occurred on October 2, 2021 that has caused lots of damage to the environment and has led people to assume what is next for the future.

On Saturday, October 2, 2021, Huntington Beach Mayor Kim Carr said a leak from an offshore oil production facility spilled 3,000 barrels of oil, which is about 126,000 gallons.

Officials said the leak is expected to have occurred about 4.5 miles offshore, and on Monday night, October 4, state and federal officials updated the potential oil spill amount to around 144,000 gallons, meaning that it was worse than everyone initially anticipated.

Carr said that the U.S coast guard was not notified of the spill until around 9:00 in the morning on October 2. The oil had ended up reaching the shore on Sunday, Oct. 3, in the early morning.

Investigators have reason to believe that a 1,200 foot cargo ship dragging anchor in rough seas ended up catching an underwater oil pipeline and pulling it across the seafloor, months before the leak had originally  occurred.

A team of federal investigators trying to chase down the cause of the spill boarded the Panama-registered MSC DANIT just hours after the massive ship had arrived on the weekend of October 16 off the Port of Long Beach, the same area where the leak was discovered earlier this month.

Coast Guard Lt. j.g. Sondra Kay Kneen said that during a prior visit by the ship during a heavy storm in January, investigators believe its anchor dragged for an unknown distance before striking the 16-inch steel pipe.

Kneen also said that the impact would have knocked an inch-thick concrete casing off the pipe and pulled it more than 100 feet, bending but not breaking the line.

What is still undetermined is whether or not the impact caused the October leak, or if the line was hit by something else at a later date or even failed due to a preexisting problem.

The Coast Guard designated the owner and operator as parties of interest in its investigation into the spill, estimated to have released about 25,000 gallons of crude into the water, killing birds, fish and mammals.

The accident fouled beaches and wetlands and led to temporary closures for cleanup work. It has reignited the debate over offshore drilling in federal waters in the Pacific, where hundreds of miles of pipelines were installed decades ago.

As the oil started spreading to more beaches, Laguna Beach closed all its beaches, asking that “all individuals remain clear of the beach and pay close attention to any beach closure or warning signs,” according to a statement released by the city.

The Coast Guard has recovered 3,150 gallons of oil from the water as of Sunday night, and 5,360 feet of boom have been deployed.

The shoreside response was conducted by 105 government agency personnels. Fourteen boats conducted oil recovery operations while three Coast Guard boats enforced a safety zone off 1,000 yards around the oil spill boats.

Also, four aircrafts were dispatched for overflight assessments. The final day of the Pacific Airshow was canceled in order to facilitate cleanup operations.

In addition, residents were advised not to swim, surf or exercise near the beach due to the potential health hazards, such as toxic fumes.

Orange County Supervisor Katrina Foley said,”You can’t get wildlife back that are killed in this process, and some of the habitat of the plant species, they’re going to be impacted for years to come.”

Damage to the environment is not the only thing that is feared because there have been many reports of surfers getting sick.

One surfer even stated, “It feels like you have a thick coating in your mouth, if you’re out there too long. It’s definitely the vapors in the air, and they’re impacting the environment.”

Animal Rescuers confirmed that Marine animals will be taken to the Pacific Marine Mammal Center, where they will be triaged and later sent to SeaWorld San Diego for rehabilitation.

The Pacific Marine Mammal Center is currently in a “holding pattern” as it awaits the arrival of oiled animals in the next hours, days and weeks. Ocean conservation nonprofit Oceana urged policymakers to begin a widespread shift to clean energy and to end offshore drilling to prevent future spills.

The Huntington Beach oil spill is just the latest in American waters this past month. After Hurricane Ida tore through the Gulf Coast in early September, it left a trail of oil in its wake, with nearly 350 oil spills reported to the Coast Guard in the days after the storm made landfall.

An analysis by the organization also found that ending new leasing for offshore oil and gas in the U.S. could prevent over 19 billion tons of greenhouse gas emissions as well as more than $720 billion in damages to people, property and the environment in the country.

The California Department of Wildlife has set up a hotline to report wildlife impacted by the oil. Individuals are advised not to handle the wildlife but to report any incidents to 877-8233-6926.

To Eat Or Not To Eat? That Is The Question

During lunch, some students don’t know where to go to eat. This sparks a problem since students only have 40 minutes to eat and some of them can’t afford to be late since they might have a strict teacher.

So for indecisive people reading this, here are some places to go to during or after school.

Quiet, spacious, and delicious are some words to describe TK burgers during lunchtime. TK is a bit more money but still a great recommendation.

It’s a Hawaiian-themed establishment, with its ceiling full of album covers from the ’70s and the ’80s and its Tiki resembling high chairs. The restaurant also has indoor and outdoor dining options.  (quote)

Paradise donuts and deli has a lot of options, all for a reasonable price. They have so many options such as breakfast and lunch styles.

They also have different assortments of drinks from bottled beverages to smoothies and shakes. Not only do they have different options, but they also have donuts, and who doesn’t love donuts. (quote)

“Taco Bell is a bit more for broke people or people trying to save money. Though it doesn’t prevent them from having an appetizing selection.”

This fast-food establishment will not fulfill your five-star expectations but it will surpass your one-star expectations. (quote)

Although they’re all great places to eat, no place is better than eating food at home, if it’s close enough.

Going For The Goal: Girls Flag Football

Mission Viejo High School girls flag football team is an after school assortment of girls playing flag.  It started when the girls had their powderpuff game a few years back; powder puff games are when the girls play flag football and the boys are the cheerleaders. After the powderpuff games, they decided to create a girls flag football league.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, this team has lost a year,  making the 2021 school year their first official season of flag football. Mission’s league is available for juniors and seniors..

They have had a few games this year, and are considered to be a fall sport. The team is a part of the Matt Leinart Flag Football league, or Females in Flag.  Opening day was on Wednesday, September 29th at the Orange County Great Park.

The team consists of  Katie Neilson, Avery Brewster, Hailey Winston, Samantha Woods, Jenae Sperling, Delia Redman, and others. The count of how many games they have won is unclear, but it can be seen that they have won a few and lost some.

Since the team is not well known, many people do not attend the games. The schedule is posted the day of the games, on their instagram @missiongirlsflagfb, or reposted on the Mission Viejo HS’s football account, @mvhsfootball.

Some teams in the league include: San Juan Hills High School, Woodbridge, Beckman, University, San Juan, Sierra Vista, and St. Joseph.

Matt Leinhart Football, in partnership with Grrridiron Girls and sponsored by Under Armour, was able to present the inaugural girls high school flag football season, and in return the team from MVHS gets to have fun playing against other schools.

The team however does not count for high school physical education credits, the girls on this team are simply doing it for fun. Many of them also play other sports including soccer, softball, and volleyball.

During practice they go over basic throwing drills. Throwing to one person and throwing back. They usually practice after school due to the fact that many of the girls have other sports going on.

Halloween Plans in Less Than 9 Minutes

Halloween has come once again with the uneasiness of all its frightful noises and horrifying figures.

Credit: Groupon

The chilly air creeps through someone’s house and there they are lying in bed, on a call with their friends, talking about random subjects. Then one of their friends asks the key question of the month, “What are we going to do for Halloween?”

Some local ideas to do for this Halloween could be amusement parks, pumpkin patches, or even haunted houses.

Horrendous monsters and scares everywhere, an amusement park that puts you into the shoes of a thriller. Knott’s Scary Farm places this thought into reality with its thrilling rides and even more terrifying scarers.

The amusement park in Buena Park, CA is open for horrifying nights with 15 haunted attractions from September 16 through October 31 at 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. on select Thursdays and Sundays, and from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. on select Fridays and Saturdays.

Make sure to buy tickets in advance since not only will it let you choose what day, but it will also save you the irritation of waiting in line. Ticket admission’s lowest cost is $59 online and the fright and fast lane pass at the lowest are $135 online, though it doesn’t include admission.

“Honestly, the lines were pretty boring, but the scarers saved the experience from its boredom,” says Sarah Quiroga, a student from MVHS, “I’ll probably get a fast pass next time to save the wait…” Though it is recommended to get the fright and fast lane pass.

The light sweet scent wafts through the air, the smell of pumpkin comes over from a place. Pumpkin City, located next to Laguna Hills mall, CA. Open during all of October from 11 a.m – 8 p.m on Mondays – Thursdays, and 10 a.m – 10 p.m on Fridays – Sundays.

There is an admission fee of $6.00 for ages of 2+ and don’t worry there is no parking fee. The patch has some rides, live performances, and yes, even pumpkins.

Of course, most rides, activities, and games need 3 – 9 tickets and each ticket costs $1.55. Though there are also 25, 50, and 100 ticket packs instead of just getting individual tickets.

At the Kaleidoscope near Mission Viejo mall, There’s an event called Haunt of Halloween on the 28th through the 31st of October. Tickets are about $18 – $29.50 and the price might go down on the 31st to about $14.50 – 29.50.

It starts at 7 p.m. on Thursday and 6 p.m on Friday-Sunday. There will be a haunted maze that is “Psychologically designed to shock your senses,” according to the official page and it also has a scare zone where people get 5 minutes to scare other maze runners. There will be a face your fears sensory attraction and live performances.

For additional fees, you could get a makeover by Hollywood special effects make-up artists from Cinema Makeup School, which will for sure frighten your friends and family. Plus, there will be a museum of oddities and Halloween-themed food.

If you want an even more local event that’s terrifying, then try Pirates Cave: Curse of Calico Jack, located at 2548 East Garfield Avenue Orange, CA. The haunted house is open on Fri-Sat: 6:30-10 p.m. and at Sun: 6:30-9 p.m.

The general admission cost is free, though they have an express queue that is $8 per person. Additionally, due to its more kid-friendliness, it’s slightly less scary compared to what you would find at a more mature haunted house but still has the scares that you would expect.

These are all suggestions for that someone whose friends have no ideas on what to do on Halloween.

The School Food is Free, But How Good Is It?

Rebekah Choi
Staff Writer

The bell rings, and classes are dismissed;, as the mentally drained students are starving and ready for something to eat, they immediately rush to the snacks area for their daily treats.

At Mission Viejo High School, students are provided with delicious, and highly rewarding free food at the break between classes.

Most reviews from a variety of students claim that they mostly look forward to the part of the day where snacks are provided just for them.

Some students’ comments on the food are, “I really like how they just have snacks ready for us.” and, “I really like their burrito things!” Some enjoy it so much that they go as far to say, “they’re wonderful, they’re tasty, and they’re free!”

The snacks that are provided during break include Bosco sticks, muffins, fruits, milk, juice, and more; not only are these snacks delicious, but they are also free of charge, another bonus.

The food that goes out the most quickly is the Bosco sticks. Bosco sticks are these little pizza sticks with cheese and tomato sauce in the middle. Of course, since most people enjoy pizza, this would probably be most students’ go-to snack to grab, leading to the cause of it going out super fast.

The next are juices. The free food station mostly offers a variety of juices such as apple juice or any fruit juice. Always a popular choice and a nice pair to go with something to eat. So it’s a great way to get a refreshing boost of energy for your next class.

Muffins are next. Muffins are usually blueberry muffins that are served chilled. Although not the most common choice for most students, a simple muffin is a good way to get those carbohydrates in and stay focused and full during the remainder of school.

Milk is also served as an option for snacks, the choices are regular or chocolate milk. It gets students replenished and ready after a long class period.

Of course, we need some healthy options when it comes to snacks. So there are always crisp apple slices waiting. A stimulating way to get the brain running again. There are alot more foods offered, but let’s stick to the most common ones.

All of these snacks are enjoyable, but with the majority of students trying to get snacks at the same time it’s hard to get what you are aiming for, especially Bosco sticks.

Most students’ go-to snacks are the Bosco sticks, with a little cheesy pizza roll wrapped up in a burrito, who would blame them. However, due to the high demand, to get these snacks you better move fast.

MVHS students’ free snacks are really what they look forward to after classes. It’s what gets students excited for break. It also brings students together and helps friends catch up and get to know what’s going on. So a great snack makes happy students which creates a happy and great school.

Halloween Costume Inspiration!

Jim Marsoobian
Staff Writer

It’s spooky season, and it’s time to decide what you’re going to dress up as!

Credit: Netflix

It’s that time of year again: the cinnamon in the air, leaves on the ground, sweaters, pumpkins everywhere you look. With Halloween shortly approaching, it’s good to have a plan for spooky celebrations.

And what’s more important than a Halloween costume? Nothing. Nothing is more important.

This year was filled with all sorts of new media, ranging from the lovable WandaVision to the edge-of-your-seat Squid Game, which means there’s a wide range of character-inspired costumes.

There’s always the classic route: dressing up as a cat or ghost and spicing it up with a personal touch. Whatever your style, there’s a perfect Halloween costume for you.

There’s no shortage of ideas this season, and if you were searching for inspiration, you’ve come to the right place!

For the cinema and television fans out there, this was a good year.

You could always go with a retro Wanda Maximoff- and all that’s needed is a vintage dress and lots of hair spray. Or Loki, which can be achieved through a simple tan suit with a TVA label ironed onto it.

And of course, the larger-than-life villain that is Cruella; the looks are endless for this costume. For a bold look, grab some makeup from the drugstore and attach newspapers (or garbage, if you’re willing enough!) to a dress.

If you want a costume that’s sure to be recognized, a player in Squid Game would be fun and easy to achieve. Just go online and buy a green tracksuit and glue a number onto it. Easy as 1-2-3 (or should I say 4-5-6?)

Of course, if something spooky is more your style, a vampire from What We Do in the Shadows is a go (fake blood is a must!).

If pop culture isn’t exactly your forte, there’s plenty of options. Perhaps the trendy ghost with sunglasses or a simple black get-up with cat makeup.

A zombie is also an easy costume because all you need is some makeup (and amazing dance moves for when Thriller comes on!). With a black dress and a resting witch face, you can achieve a costume that will leave your friends “witching” they look as cool as you!

Celebrity fanatics also have a lot of material to work with this year. There is Harry Styles’ iconic Grammy’s look. The Bernie Sanders in mittens meme. Lady Gaga in any of her iconic outfits. And of course, how could you forget Kim Kardashian at the Met Gala? Or, for that matter, anyone who attended the Met Gala.

For trick-or-treating and partying with your BFF or your partner, duo costumes are a must! There’s the infamous rap duo from Saturday Night Live, with Pete Davidson and Timothee Chalamet, which would definitely be a hit.

A cute couple’s idea would be Morticia and Gomez Addams from The Addams Family or Jack and Sally from the Nightmare Before Christmas. Going as a cute pair of frogs is also an amazing costume idea to do with a loved one. Steve and Robin’s “Scoop’s Ahoy” outfits from Stranger Things are an adorable way to match with your best friend, and you and your S.O. are sure to have a blast dressed as everyone’s favorite anti-heroes: Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy.

Overall, this Halloween is bound to be fun, and I hope everyone has a fabulous time!

A March To Victory

The Mission Viejo marching band hosts their annual competition

It was a cold October morning when an array of students from different high schools across southern California began to show up to Mission Viejo’s home marching band competition. Students were required to gather at school at 10:00 am to begin setting up, warming up, and practicing.

“It was very stressful leading up to the competition,” Geneva Bjornestad, Class of 2025 stated. The marching band had been working for this competition for quite some time, a week before school started in fact.

Despite the fact that Mission Vieijo had had experience with hosting competitions in the past and excelling in doing so, this environment was quite different. Jackson Deberard, class of 2022, explained, “Two classes of people had never had a competition before, We weren’t sure if they were able to step up.”

The band put in a lot of effort and hard work leading up to the competition. They had 2-4 hours of practice Monday through Friday, as well as a band camp the week before school started.

Brice Kirk, class of 2022, elaborated on the atmosphere leading up, explaining, “There was a lot of nervousness, for people doing it again, it was the first comp in two years, and many people had never done it before.” Despite this, the band had done quite a bit of preparation and was ready for the day to come.

Since it was a home competition, Mission Viejo was not only required to perform but also to host and set up the entire event. Thanks to a large fleet of volunteers, the event went exceedingly smooth.

Despite the stellar crew that helped out, this didn’t prevent all of the  setbacks for the band. Brice Kirk adds, “We were a bit worried that our show was too short and that we were going to be penalized.”

Another worry was that the weather. “It was cold outside and difficult to tune, it being cold made it hard to march” Gavin Hemmrit, Class of 2023 recalled.

Regardless of these circumstances, the musicians knew they had a job to do; to seize a victory for Mission Viejo High School. Eventually, the ensemble’s time to perform came around the corner and the students knew exactly what to do.

Brass bursted with expression, woodwinds filled the air with beautiful melodies, percussion held a strong pulse, and colorguard performed their visually stunning routine. The ensemble was satisfied with their performance and only awaited results.

Eventually, results were announced and Mission Viejo received the good news they were waiting for; they had won 1st place in their division. “I felt accomplished that we got first place at our competition,” Jackson Deberard exclaimed.

There was a sense of accomplishment and relief amongst all of the members of the band. Brice Kirk recalled, “I felt incredibly hyped after our visual tech told me I was carrying the band.”

In the end, the Mission Viejo High School marching band home competition was a massive success. David Parsons, class of 2025, encapsulated Mission Viejo’s success in one of the students commonly used quotes. “Sweat like pigs, work like dogs, march like gods.”
